David Tennant and Catherine Tate are making a long-awaited return to Doctor Who. They will appear in an episode set to air in 2023, which will coincide with the franchise's 60th anniversary celebrations. The news was revealed Sunday evening, and has fans over the moon to see two of the most popular actors from the series return to their roles after all this time. It also comes a week after it was revealed that Ncuti Gatwa will be playing the fourteenth Doctor, taking over from Jodie Whittaker next year. Related: Why Ncuti Gatwa Is The Perfect Choice For The Fourteenth DoctorOf course, this immediately raises the question: how on earth are they going to be reunited? Tennant's Doctor is long gone, and Donna will literally die if she remembers her time with him, having had her memory erased. The former is a little easier to get around, as past Doctors have returned, but that doesn't explain how Donna will join the story once again, and live to tell the tale.

"They're back! And it looks impossible - first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?", says showrunner Russel T Davies, revealing the news. "Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime."

That gives us even more questions than answers, but it's probably the best insight we're going to get until next year. Of course, Doctor Who fans will have enough to keep them busy with the upcoming regeneration anyway, as Jodie Whittaker says goodbye to the role after five years.

Doctor Who's next special is set to air this autumn.
