Days Gone is a game to look out for. With its release on PC, and the rumors floating around about a possible sequel, this title is slowly gaining a bit of momentum. Despite its mixed reception at launch, Days Gone was a commercial success. Many of the technical inconsistencies that characterized the game in its early days are now matters of the past. What remains is a solid experience to be thoroughly enjoyed.

If you already beat the story, you are ready for the ultimate mission: getting gold in the Black Friday challenge. In a past update, the game developers released additional free content for all players to tackle, in the form of bonus challenges accessible through the main menu. Essentially, these are extra levels that test your overall mastery in riding your drifter bike, surviving the most challenging hordes, and fighting marauders. You get to do all that while playing as your favorite character from the game.

7 Iron Mike

Iron Mike rides his motorcycle.

To equip any character skin go to the challenge menu, select your level of choice, and navigate to the character icon. Then, simply pick your favorite. You do need a couple of in-game credits to unlock each one, as well as reputation levels, but that shouldn't be a problem since you obtain both through gameplay — no microtransactions involved.

Iron Mike is available almost immediately, and he's the perfect choice for any gunfight versus other survivors. That's essentially the summary of his dark backstory: he used to live in Sherman's Camp, where the real fight wasn't against the Freakers, but other people themselves. All you need to unlock him is reputation level 2 and 45 credits.

6 Carlos

Carlos confronts Deacon in the Ripper camp.

If you fantasize about being the bad guy, Carlos is surely the right pick. The infamous antagonist within the Days Gone universe commands the Rippers' cult. Interestingly, their twisted doctrine prevents them from fighting against the Freakers, and you can actually see that happen in the campaign. If you lure a group of Swarmers to a Ripper camp, these strange fanatics simply kneel and wait for a swift death instead of running away.

No spoilers here, but once you progress far enough in the main story, you might grasp why Carlos is the way he is. That isn't to justify any of the violent acts he partakes in or causes. Nevertheless, it's always fun to unlock the boss as a playable character, even if only to realize how weak bosses are when you get to control them.

5 Alkai

Alkai Turner's character model. He is the vendor who lives in the Hot Springs camp.

It's hard to say exactly why Alkai accounts for one of the available skins. In truth, he's rather unremarkable in the main game since he sits all day in a shop. Though, that makes sense, he is a vendor after all. Despite that, his outfit puts most others to shame.

Brown cowboy hat, blue denim jacket, and a satchel make him an off-brand Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2. That's about all the reason you need to pick him.

4 Sarah

Deacon and Sarah spend some time together before the apocalypse.

Deacon's wife is also available to play as in the game's challenges. As a formidable scientist, she might not initially come across as much of a fighter, but in your hands she could easily wreck some havoc. That is, unless you try one of the four high octane bike levels — Sarah does ride pretty well in her own right during the main storyline.

The only caveat that comes with playing as Sarah is that you do need to work your way up to reputation level 5. However, by then you'll have so many credits that spending a few for a new skin won't be a problem at all.

3 Shirtless Deacon

Shirtless Deacon gets visited by Rikki after his arm is burned.

This skin is pretty straightforward. It's just our old friend Deacon, without the fifty shirts he usually wears as part of his survival ensemble. It's good to see a video game protagonist who doesn't look like a Greek god underneath endless layers of clothing. Besides that, Deacon rocks some awesome tattoos and a dramatic glare that hints at the worst things he has done.

Seeing him without a hat is a bit weird. Nonetheless, he looks exactly how you would expect him to: full on greaser style, even when his clothes are missing.

2 Nero Soldier

The Nero Soldier skin in Days Gone.

No other playable character emanates the same mysteriously menacing aura. The Nero Soldier is heavily reminiscent of The Fourth Survivor from Resident Evil 2's extra modes, despite having a different color scheme. There's something uncanny about his black gas mask with red lenses.

It would be astounding if you could play with this skin in the main story. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Nevertheless, roleplaying as a soldier has its benefits, especially in the Surrounded challenge, where you are literally equipped with the strongest heavy military weapons — you might as well keep it consistent with a military look.

1 Boozer

Deacon's best friend, along with Rikki, is immediately available from the get-go for 45 credits. No need to work your way up to the highest reputation level. That's neat, considering Booze-man is easily the most interesting side character in Days Gone. It would be awesome to play as him in the campaign.

He wears a slightly more vibrant version of Deacon's vest, matched all too well with a grey long-sleeve shirt. It's easy to imagine how Boozer could withstand an arm-wrestling contest against Kratos himself (without godly powers). There really isn't a better candidate to roleplay as.
