These are death traps for even the most skilled of players, but they are especially difficult when you are just starting out on your survival adventure.

Use Stealth To Avoid Combat

When you've got pistols, rifles, and pipe bombs in your inventory, stealth might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, Deacon's ability to move quietly is one of the most valuable resources you have in the game.

To sneak, press circle to crouch when you are walking. You will know that you are sneaking when the speaker icon next to the mini-map shows a mute symbol.

If you don't want to get off your bike, you can still get around without attracting attention. Push the left stick forward without revving the engine to make Deacon walk the bike forward quietly.

If sneaking doesn't work out, you have a few options. You can either fight the horde or try to get away alive.

Use Explosives To Kill Large Groups

If you want to take down a horde, there are plenty of tricks that you should know. The best one to always remember is to use explosives.

Deacon can use an assortment of different explosive weaponry to help him whittle down large hordes. Whilst playing, gather materials to craft Molotov cocktails or collect pipe bombs and grenades. These will give you a huge advantage and take out big chunks of the horde straight away.

If you've accidentally stumbled upon a horde and don't have any explosives to hand, don't lose hope. Survey the area around you and look for explosive barrels or crates which could be used to cause some damage. Then, try to have the horde chase you past these traps. As the horde moves past, shoot the explosive trap and plenty of the freaks should be blown into rotten pieces.

Invest In Stamina... Or Your Bike

So, you're lost, you've got no explosives and the surrounding area is devoid of anything you could use to your advantage. Time to run.

Running away is a perfectly valid strategy in most survival horror games and Days Gone is no different. Throughout the game you will find countless hordes that you aren't prepared for and that's fine. If you play smart, you can do some preparation before so that you are always able to get away.

When clearing Nero checkpoints, you will find Nero Injectors that can upgrade one of Deacon's core attributes: Health, Stamina, and Focus. Invest in stamina to ensure that Deacon is able to dodge and run away when needed.

Likewise, use your credits to purchase upgrades for your bike. You can make it faster, increase the fuel capacity, and even make the engine run quietly so that you have a higher chance of sneaking past those hordes in the first place.

With the above tips in mind, you should be able to survive any encounter with a horde. Whether you fight or run, the main priority should always be to stay alive.
