You can't go back to the town frequently for food when you have a remote little shed in the middle of the forest, away from zombies and hostile players. So you might want to have some farming going since it will allow you to get a constant food source in DayZ.
To be able to farm you need a couple of different tools like a Farming Hoe, Pickaxe, and Shovel for digging up soil, a Disinfectant Spray for protecting your crops from infection, and a Garden Lime to get more yield from your crops.

How To Plant And Harvest Crops
To be able to plant seeds you need to have Farming Hoe, Pickaxe, or Shovel. You can make a farm plot for your crops with one of these three tools and plant your seed. After planting your seed you should water the soil if it is too dry. Then your plant will start to grow up.
Watering isn't always necessary, if you are lucky enough rain will do the heavy lifting for you. Also, you can use Greenhouses to plant your seeds. You can recognize these Greenhouses from their oldness, and broken windows. After your crops are fully grown, you can simply harvest them by holding down the "F" button.
How To Increase Yield
Garden Lime and Plant Material is a great way to increase your yield. Garden Lime items can be found in farms and greenhouses. You can apply this to farm plots before or after planting your seeds. Also, you can use Plant Materials if you can't find any Garden Lime. You can get Plant Materials after harvesting your crops and decayed farm plots.
