The Roots of Dread chapter of Dead By Daylight adds yet another Killer to the blood-soaked roster: The Dredge. The online co-op game sees four Survivors take on various iterations of pure evil, stealthily working as a team (or on their own) to fix generators, cleanse totems, heal their compatriots, and make their escape before they are sacrificed to The Entity by one of 28 potential Killers.

The Gloaming

The Dredge is a shadowy manifestation of suffering and inner turmoil, a mangled embodiment of the fear it dredges up (geddit?) in its prey. Its unique power, Reign of Darkness, reflects this all-consuming horror.

The passive Nightfall Metre starts charging up as soon as the Trial begins. This is visible to the Killer as a circle around each Survivor's icon on the left-hand side of the screen. Once the metre is full, a thick veil of darkness falls over the map, forcing Survivors to fend for themselves in near pitch-black for an entire dreadful minute. During this period, you move quicker, quieter, and see much better in the dark than the Survivors.

What's more, Killer Instinct is activated during Nightfall; The Dredge can see each Survivor's location in a glowing white aura, and they won't be able to hear the tell-tale heartbeat that indicates that they are in the Killer's immediate Terror Radius.

The Dredge also boasts an especially sneaky special ability called The Gloaming. Much as The Nightmare begins with eight Dream Snares, The Dredge begins each Trial with three teleportation tokens. These tokens are spent by teleporting between lockers - or Gloaming - and leaving behind a remnant, which can be returned to at any time.

When you teleport to a locker and search it, you will immediately grab anyone hiding inside. Remember, though: Survivors can now lock the lockers without you knowing, delaying your exit by a handful of precious seconds.

The Dredge's Perks

Perks

Dissolution: For three seconds after sustaining an injury, Survivors who vault a pallet will immediately break it.

Darkness Revealed: Searching a locker reveals any Survivor in an eight-metre radius of you.

Septic Touch: Survivors who heal within your Terror Radius are hit with the Blindness and Exhausted effects for up to ten seconds.

The Dredge's perks pertain to three strategies of gameplay. Dissolution is great for a chase build alongside Hex: Blood Favour and any other pallet-crushing perks you hold dear. Pair those two with Darkness Revealed and No One Escapes Death for an endgame Killer's dream come true, a quick way to get all your offerings hooked as fast as possible with minimal effort.

Finally, Septic Touch is a must-have for beginners as well as advanced DBDers who want to effortlessly farm Bloodpoints. It is especially useful during Nightfall; as Survivors are unaware of the Killer's Terror Radius, sadistic Dredges will enjoy drifting amidst the Survivors and watching them suffer.

The Dredge's Best Power Add-Ons

The Dredge and its best power add-ons for Reign Of Darkness in Dead By Daylight

Key Power Add-Ons

Malthinker's Skull: Nightfall charge is sped up by 66 percent when any survivor becomes injured.

Caffeine Tablets: Lockers sealed by the Suvivors glow yellow whilst charging Gloaming.

Broken Doll: Nightfall length increased to 80 seconds from one minute.

Field Recorder: The Trial begins in Nightfall, Nightfall is activated as soon as the last generator is fixed, and any Survivor who touches a remanent becomes Exhausted for 15 seconds.

Iridescent Wooden Plank: Survivors take twice as much damage from a basic attack for the last fifteen seconds of Nightfall.

Nightfall and The Gloaming get supercharged by any of the twenty Power add-ons unlocked from the Bloodweb. Each add-on is discarded after use, with the brown-backed common add-ons being available to you at lower levels.

Caffeine Tablets is a great early-game addition to your Power, allowing you to tell which lockers have been locked by the Survivors. Until you grasp the mechanics of this new Killer, this is a solid option to avoid wasting your time breaking pesky locks.

The Malthinker's Skull is good for a brutal Nightfall build, especially when Survivors can be a slippery bunch who are good at escaping the chase after a single hit. Boost it with Broken Doll for longer, deadlier Nightfall sessions with shorter cool-downs in between.

Lastly, Field Recorder and Iridescent Wood Plank are high-tier add-ons that will give you an incredible boost both at the start and end of each Trial, slowing down the Survivors as they try to sabotage your remnants by sticking them with the Exhausted effect in the process. Easy pickings.

Tips For Playing As The Dredge

The Dredge is a moderate difficulty Killer, meaning the mechanics will take some getting used to before you get the hang of it. Remember that during Nightfall, you can only see Survivors using Killer Instinct if they are not hiding behind a wall. This is the only object you cannot see through, so check inside any houses or shacks just in case.

Also, use your remnants wisely! You drop a remnant whenever you teleport, so be sure to start Gloaming from a vital choke point - leave a remnant in front of one of the exit gates or in a spot which is densely populated by loads of generators, for example. You don't use tokens when you teleport back to a remanent, so a clever combination of tokens and remnants will ensure you can interrupt, block, and surprise the Survivors when they least expect it!
