We now have a better idea as to when Dead Cells – the successful rogue-lite game from French studio Motion Twin – will officially make the move to consoles.

In a tweet posted on Wednesday, indie video game publisher, Merge Games, announced that they are partnering with Motion Twin to bring the popular title to the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch. Physical versions of Dead Cells will be available (alongside digital versions) for both the PS4 and Switch in August 2018.

In a reply to a question asking whether or not the game would be receiving an Xbox One version, Motion Twin responded stating that only a digital release is planned for the Xbox One at this time, but will be available on “day one with the other versions.”

While not yet posted on any major U.S.-based online retail sites, Merge Games indicated that Signature Edition Games – a part of Merge – will be the U.K.-based developer responsible for physically bringing Dead Cells to life. According to the product listings on Signature’s website, physical editions of the game will cost $30USD. Pre-order information has not yet been released.

With the original announcement having come in January of this year, it is refreshing to see that Dead Cells’ move to consoles is moving along, full-steam ahead. Signature Edition Games should be more than capable of successfully bringing the game to consoles, as they have done so in the past with other titles such as Super Meat Boy, The Long Reach, and Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles.

Signature Edition specializes in bringing popular indie games to life in the form of special collectors’ editions (hence the developer’s name). Both versions of the physical Dead Cells release will be standard editions, which seems like a missed opportunity. There will undoubtedly be fans that played the game on PC, but will also pick up a console version of the game. Rewarding those players with a special collectors’ edition option would probably be a hot ticket item.

This news was also timed perfectly with Dead Cells’ one-year anniversary, having been released in May of 2017. The game is currently available on PC through Steam for $20USD, and continues to maintain a “Very Positive” review rating.
