The game is quite a bit shorter than the previous installments. While quality over quantity is a good thing to be sure, it can leave you wanting more. If you find yourself hungry for more games like Dead Island 2, you're in luck. There are a handful of games out there that are similar in tone, location, or are just good old-fashioned zombie games.

10 Grand Theft Auto 5

If the zombies weren't really your speed, but you thought LA was the perfect setting for a game, then GTA 5 may be your next best bet.

While not LA in name, Los Santos is the fictional and spiritual equivalent in a lot of ways. A diverse population, plenty of attractions, and even more ways to get in trouble. While there are no zombies to kill, playing as the trio of protagonists always gives you something to do. Follow each of their stories, see how they alter Los Santos to better fit their needs, and see how that works out for them in the long run.

9 Zeno Clash

While the streets of LA may be fun, sometimes you want a more fantasy-centric setting to spend time in. If now is one of those times, see how you like Zeno Clash.

It's a first-person and melee-focused game, much like Dead Island 2. The world and enemies are a bit brighter and more comic-looking at times, which can be a good change from LA's blood and fire-strewn streets. It's a fun mix of wacky and combat, and you won't find many other games like it out there.

8 Atomic Heart

One thing that many fans of the Dead Island series were surprised about was the new push toward humor from the characters. If you enjoyed the witty banter and punchy one-liners, then Atomic Heart will be a good follow-up.

P-3 is full of witty comments from start to finish as he explores the cities and labs of Facility 3826. In both games, the monsters and robots that come at you can be quite horrifying, so it is nice from time to time to have a little comic relief in the form of your character trying to cope with the horrors. If this mix of comedy and tragedy is the right mix, check it out.

7 Dead Rising 3

A more humorous approach to the zombie game genre. Dead Rising 3 finds you in a similar city to LA and a similar situation.

The zombies, the odd assortment of characters, the crafting, it's all here for you. The crafting in this game is a bit more pervasive, allowing you to create things like a paddle with a chainsaw strapped to each end. The game doesn't always take itself too seriously, but it's good at knowing when to turn up the humor and when to let the zombies speak for themselves.

6 Dying Light 2

Dying Light has been a series that has gone toe-to-toe with the Dead Island series for some time now. Why not see what Dying Light 2 has in store for you?

The combat mechanics are similar in both games, swinging your favorite weapon to try to keep the zombies down for the count. But, Dying Light 2 has the added push toward speed. Parkour and how you traverse the surrounding spaces are big factors in how you play the game. There are plenty of skills to master and a solid story to boot for anyone interested.

5 Back 4 Blood

Sometimes fighting off waves of zombies is better with friends; for those moments, you'll want to check out Back 4 Blood.

It's the spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead franchise that practically revamped the zombie genre. Here you and three friends go through various missions and maps, taking out waves of zombies and grabbing new equipment along the way. It's a more gun-focused play style, but the card system and special infected will be a similar feature after Dead Island 2.

4 Chivalry 2

Maybe zombies aren't your favorite baddie to fight. Maybe you prefer a more medieval setting to your slashing games or want to play with friends?

Either way, Chivalry 2 has some mechanics you will definitely enjoy. This hack-and-slash game takes all the fun of the weapon-swinging mayhem of Dead Island 2 but plops you in the middle of a medieval battlefield instead. There are plenty of weapons to try your hand at dispatching enemy players, so you won't get bored any time soon.

3 State Of Decay 2

The zombies of Trumbull County are a threat all to their own. But they do somewhat resemble the zombies of Dead Island 2 in both form and function.

State Of Decay 2 is an older name on this list, but the series has a following that elevates it above some of its competitors. It puts a big focus on the zombie survival mechanics, with crafting, base building, and planning all playing key parts. If you wanted a bit more of a community mindset to your zombie game, look no further than this title.

2 The Walking Dead Telltale Series

If a more story-driven look at surviving a zombie apocalypse is what you're looking for, The Walking Dead series has you covered.

Combat is far from the focus here. Instead, you'll follow a series of characters as they try and make a new life in the zombie-infested American South. It's a deeply emotional and grim ride, but it will stay with you forever. If you're a fan of the television series, this will add a lot more depth to the characters in the universe. If not, it's a solid standalone that won't require you to get caught up on any lore.

1 Dead Island

If you're a big fan of Dead Island 2, why not go back and see where the series began with the original Dead Island?

If you've been a fan from the beginning, go back and relive the scary fun of Banoi. If Dead Island 2 is your first time with the series, then see how much it has improved and learn some of the lore that makes the series a big name in the zombie genre. Either way, it is a real treat to go back and play around on the tropical island on new consoles.
