Death Stranding has joined a club that grows less exclusive with every passing year, as it's the latest game to receive a perfect score from Famitsu magazine.

Famitsu is one of Japan's most well-regarded gaming publications and it waited almost a decade before issuing its first perfect score. The reviews in Famitsu are conducted by four different people who score a game out of ten, with the four scores being collated at the end. The first game to ever receive a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time back in 1998 and less than thirty games have received it since, with the most recent (before Death Stranding) being Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age in 2017.

The perfect score for Death Stranding in Famitsu might be surprising to some, considering the divisive response the game has received from critics. There are some outlets that have hailed Death Stranding as a masterpiece and one of the most important games of the decade, while others have called it boring and pretentious. It's clear that it's going to be a love or hate kind of game based on the polarizing reaction it has already received.

Death Stranding is one of the most highly-anticipated games of 2019 and the abundance of positive reviews will likely drown out the detractors. A perfect score in Famitsu might not hold the same weight now as it did in the days before Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword received them, but it's still an amazing accomplishment for the game nonetheless.

Death Stranding will be released for PlayStation 4 on November 8, 2019. The game will be coming to PC in 2020.
