Acclaimed game director Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding may have been a divisive game, but it seems all of the hype led to good sales. In a new interview with Livedoor (translated by Gematsu), Kojima stated that his Norman Reedus simulator was a sales success, moving enough copies to be considered profitable.

When asked how the game did sales-wise, Kojima said, "We surpassed the amount we needed to make a profit, so I think it sold well enough to be called a 'success,' recoupment of development costs included." That doesn't necessarily mean runaway success, but it shows that a certain audience is hungry for incredibly unique experiences.

Kojima then started teasing that something else is cooking, stating, "We'll release the PC version soon and have already secured enough profit to prepare for what's next, so there's no need to worry." When pressed about what that means, he gave a pretty typical PR response. "I can't say anything since it's still in the planning stages, but we're doing various work behind the scenes."

If you were getting your hopes up about this project being something related to Metal Gear or Silent Hill, then you'll need to temper your expectations. Recent rumors have been floating around about Sony or Microsoft potentially buying the rights to both series from Konami, but it seems that Kojima knows nothing about that talk.

Livedoor brought up the subject and Kojima said, "Ah, that's completely false. I haven't heard anything about it at least." It could be that Kojima is under an NDA and not able to speak to the validity of such claims, but these words are pretty definitive. It seems Konami will be retaining the rights to both IPs for the foreseeable future (sadly).

It's nice to see that Death Stranding was able to find success in this crowded market. Releasing late into 2019, there was every chance that bigger Triple-A titles could have overshadowed the title's launch and stolen some of its thunder. While Kojima's name undoubtedly helped move units, people were clearly drawn to something that was contained within the madness.

I wouldn't expect to see a Death Stranding 2 come from this, but if Kojima is able to keep making weird games, then this was all worth it.
