Trying to cover any news about Death Stranding has seemed like a lost cause since anytime even a bit of information is leaked about Hideo Kojima’s next game, it tends to raise more questions than it answers.
However, against all odds, we might actually have some real, actual news about Death Stranding. It’s like finding a unicorn.
Kojima has been teasing something related to Death Stranding for a little while now. Of course, these teases have been cryptic in that funny, old Kojima way. He recently hinted at something going down on May 29th, but the folks over at Resetera might have found something out a day early.
A user named Lifejumper posted a thread with what looks to be a short synopsis for the game. It’s not much, but if it’s legitimate, this would be the first, real detail about what the story of Death Stranding actually is.
The leaked synopsis reveals that Norman Reedus’ character, Sam Bridges, “must brave a world utterly transformed by the Death Stranding. Carrying the stranded remnants of the future in his hands, Sam embarks on a journey to reunite the shattered world one step at a time.”
While it doesn’t necessarily give us a lot to go on, it’s the first bit of concrete plot information we’ve really gotten. Everything else has mostly been obscure, bewildering gobbledygook from Kojima himself. Don’t get us wrong, it’s fun gobbledygook from a tremendously creative mind, but sometimes it’s nice to just know what the heck is going on.
It gives us a bit of an idea about the game’s plot, but there are still many holes that need to be filled. For example, is Death Stranding the thing that’s making the rain age people super quick? Is it the goo that Troy Baker’s character uses to make his giant lion monster? Is it the name of the weird floating people in the sky? Is it the babies? Is it Mads Mikkelsen?
Also, what is the “remnants of the future” that Sam Bridges has? In the trailers, he’s been shown to be some kind of courier who seems to be delivering what looks like corpses. Do those corpses hold some kind of key to stopping the Death Stranding? Or are the babies the remnants? We just really want to know what’s going on with the babies.
It’s possible that this synopsis was not the big surprise promised, and that this was something that was going to be released soon or in the near future. To be fair, a short description of the plot is a godsend at this point in the strange media and hype cycle of Death Stranding. You’d have to assume, however, that Kojima probably wouldn’t have talked a big game about delivering something if all it was going to be was a few sentences. Although this is Kojima we’re talking about, so who knows.
For now, if the leak is accurate, we might finally have some idea of what Death Stranding is about. We’ll see soon what Kojima has in store for us. Fingers crossed for a release date, or some gameplay footage. However, there’s a strong chance it’ll just be another trailer, featuring more inexplicable, magic babies.
