Deathloop is an action-packed first-person shooter developed by Arkane Studios, where you play as dexterous Colt Vahn, trying to break free from a seemingly endless time loop. Deathloop received mostly positive reviews for its delightful story, packed to the brim with fun little easter eggs and hidden areas waiting for you to explore.

However, some of the best parts are those areas you might not think twice about checking out and the additional story paths that look inconsequential at first glance. These stories are even more interesting than those within the main portion of the game, providing further insight into the strange goings-on at Blackreef.

Updated September 15, 2022, by Nico Dagny: Part of Deathloop’s charm is how much there is to discover. From hidden areas to characters’ backstories, there’s always something new you’re bound to learn whenever you boot up the game. And as time passes on, more of these plotlines have been discovered.

Spoilers for Deathloop

11 Cat Fall Trinket

Deathloop two eternalists firing another out of a cannon.

During the afternoon in Updaam, you can see two eternalists trying to launch one another from a cannon. If you allow them to do this, the eternalist in the cannon will shoot out at high velocity and die in an inaccessible area. However, if you head towards the cannon and replace the battery with one of the used ones on the floor beside it, the eternalist will still die, though this time will land on the roof of a building in Karl’s Bay.

Return to that roof in Karl’s Bay (also during the evening), and you’ll find a trinket the man dropped. This is the Cat Fall trinket which reduces the fall damage you take.

10 The Boathouse Gas Chamber

Deathloop Colt escaping the gas chamber.

To find the gas chamber, you’ll first want to get to Frank’s club in Fristad Rock. Climb the club's roof and jump down the left side onto the snowy rocks below. Here you’ll find a cave opening that leads into the boathouse. As soon as you’re in, an unknown man will start talking to you over the intercom as he fills the building with gas.

Use the note in the room to find a way out, but don’t worry too much, as you can return to this area at the start of the next loop if you die. Once turning off the gas, you’re free to explore the control room, where there’s a note explaining how Colt once used the gas chamber to take out those who questioned the loop.

9 Saving Pick Rexly

Pick Rexley from Deathloop

Deathloop's Julianna and Colt are said to be the only two people who remember the loop's previous events. That is unless you complete Pick Rexly's sidequest. Situated past the Gardens of Perception in the Karl's Bay area, you can enter an apartment where you'll find a note. The note states that the person who wrote it knows they're in a time loop.

Coming back to the apartment at different times of the day gives you access to other letters, one of which provides a code for the room's locked door. Once inside the room, Pick will ask you to kill her. It's a weirdly moving side quest showing how the loop has affected just one inhabitant of Black Reef.

8 Starbird And Beetlequeen's Secret

Characters Starbird and Beetlequeen from Deathloop sitting on the edge of a mountain.

Two characters you come across in Dorsey Square have a stranger past than it seems, and because combat often turns into a quick-firing bloodbath, it's easy to rush in blind and miss this piece of dialogue. However, if you wait and listen to their conversation, you find out they're called Starbird and Beetlequeen, and these two share a dark secret.

It turns out they hid a body at sea and are rather stressed about whether they concealed it well enough. So who is this person they buried, and why did they kill them? Perhaps this secret is better off left uncovered.

7 The Spy Hideout

A corkboard with a map and notes pinned to it.

Located on Fristad Rock is a locked bunker requiring three codes to enter. These codes are found in different map areas through a complex puzzle but will allow you access once acquired and used on the bunker door. Once inside, you'll have access to classified reports, blueprints, weapons, and an amusing little Dishonored easter egg.

The bunker's intel will make it easier to enter new areas, also providing extra info on your targets. The spy hideout is pretty hard to find but contains some notable information.

6 Julianna And Colt's Secret Ending

Colt and Julianna from Deathloop having a gun duel.

There are three possible endings to obtain in Deathloop, but one of these is a little less known. If you choose not to shoot Julianna during the pistol duel, the two of you will make amends in a secret cutscene. Julianna and Colt discuss their plans for the day, settling on the idea of catching up over a drink.

It just goes to show that all the killing, maiming, and dismembering won't get in the way of this father-daughter duo.

5 Assassin In Updaam Disguised As A Statue

An assassin posing as a statue in the game Deathloop, in the Updaam area.

While venturing through Updaam, you'll come across a statue that is weirdly reminiscent of the mannequins from Condemned: Criminal Origins, which gave many gamers quite the fright during its release. "This guy looks a little too real," you might say. Well, there's a fifty-fifty chance that you're right. Sometimes these unnerving statues host an intruder in their ranks.

This mystery assassin seems to be waiting to ambush someone. And, I think Colt is out of the question since virtually standing on the assassin's toes doesn't even get you a reaction.

4 Yerhva Queen Of Riddles

A machine with a painting of two hands over it. The machine asks the player questions about Blackreef.

Yerhva Queen of Riddles is a machine found in Karl's Bay that asks the player ten questions regarding the history of Blackreef. Answering these questions correctly might not give you the outcome you expect, though it's this kind of weird humor and rewards that sets Deathloop apart. Yerhva plays a message revealing that it is the "only surviving specimen of its kind" known to exist still.

A legendary weapon admittedly would have been the better reward, but we can't fault the compliment players got instead – "Your mind is overflowing with bountiful knowledge."

3 Death By Dominoes

Deathloop Colt kicking dominoes to kill an eternalist.

On top of a building, you’ll find a lined row of boxes with question mark symbols in the place of its name. If you ignore these boxes, you can go back to your day. However, if you decide to push them because why not? Something will happen.

The boxes will start to fall like dominoes from the roof you’re on and onto the one below until eventually falling to the ground right next to an eternalist. When these boxes hit the floor, they’ll explode, meaning you just murdered a perfectly innocent bystander who was minding their own business. Good thing they’ll return in the next loop. Probably.

2 The Incredible Deathpoop

A neon sign placed upon snowy ground. It reads "Poop". A possible Easter egg in Deathloop.

Time loops and drinking are not a great mix, so when one eternalist decides that a generator looks just like the urinal two blocks away from here, he, you know, dies. Unfortunately, not only did one wasted soul lose their life over a silly little mistake, but another could no longer finish the art piece they were creating.

However, if you stop the eternalist from making this grave mistake and return later in the evening, you'll see the finished masterpiece. It's a sign spelling 'poop,' isn't it?

1 Deathloop's Connection To Dishonored

Split image of similar boxes containing the same pistols. Photos from Deathloop and Dishonored.

The moments before the ending of Deathloop sees Julianna open a box revealed to contain two antique-looking pistols. There's a smell of familiarity in the air as these pistols not only look like they came from a time gone by but also resemble those in Dishonored.

One side quest in Dishonored has the characters Lord Shaw and Corvo duel as a 'contest of honor' with potentially the same two pistols. Do these games take place within the same universe? If they do, all we can say is it's good that the time loop wasn't around during Dishonored.
