Deathloop is almost here, and reviews for the inventive new FPS are starting to roll in today. It looks like the game is confidently joining this year’s top tier, as many critics out there — including us at TheGamer — believe it’s one of the most original and interesting triple-A titles in a very long time.

With Deathloop, Arkane combines its strongest features of past titles and mixing them with a unique timeloop mechanic to create something tremendously satisfying to explore. You can see flashes of the studio’s previous games here — from Dark Messiah to Dishonored – yet there’s more than enough fresh ideas to keep you entertained.

Our review went live recently, and we're pretty impressed with what the game offers, saying that “Deathloop feels like your first bite of a cheesecake after being stranded on a desert island and living off seaweed for six months. In a sea of shotgun-spread triple-A games that are all too familiar, Deathloop is a precision 50. cal bullet of originality right through your eye socket.” Overall, the game just feels good — snappy and precise.

Here’s what other leading critics are saying about Arkane Lyon’s latest title:

You may note that critics are all but praising Deathloop, which currently stands at 88 at Metacritic and 88 at OpenCritic. Judging from the reviews, Arkane Lyon’s new installment is “a masterclass in open-ended action game design” and the studio’s “PlayStation swansong that has boundless energy and ingenuity that no other game can match.”

Some minor things that can hamper your experience on the island of Blackreef are occasionally a bad connection in PvP, tons of backtracking (which you probably can expect from the game about a time loop with no manual save system), and a small number of annoying bugs. Also, some critics reported AI could be smarter with this one.

All in all, Deathloop is one of the PS5’s best games so far, offering some of the most impressive level design, art direction, narrative design, and audio work in the business. The game is launching on September 14 on PC and PS5 — do yourself a favor and play it as soon as possible.
