Grass-type starters are criminally underrated. For whatever reason, they rarely achieve the iconic, much-adored status of their fire and water counterparts. Venusaur and Meganium might be the only real exceptions, pretty much exclusively down to nostalgia for their generations.

But at long last, one of the very best of the bunch might be getting the respect it deserves. As spotted by a dataminer, a recent Pokemon Unite patch added a reference to Decidueye to the game's files, suggesting the owl-archer Pokemon could be added in a future update.

Courtesy of @ecipse_tt on Twitter, screenshots of the game's files show that there is a reference to Decidueye, hinting that the developers are preparing to add the grass-type somewhere down the line. There's also references to Skwovet and Nickit, meaning Pokemon Unite players could be in store for a bunch of new characters to choose from.

Anyone hoping to see one of the best starters in Pokemon Unite soon, however, may need to adjust their expectations. Another dataminer, @PokemonuniteL, highlighted that the namedrop is literally all we have to go on right now. It appears that, typically, Pokemon that are to be added to the game soon at least have a temporary moveset in the game's files, even if it is subject to change later on. The fact that Decidueye has none of this would indicate that it is very early in development, so probably not ready to be added in 2021.

Pokemon Unite datamines seem to have so far been pretty accurate. The aforementioned @PokemonuniteL tweeted out an image of several then-unrevealed Holowear items, with some now actually being in the game. The tweet was made June 27, a month before the game launched.

Another thing this datamine does suggest is that the developers are playing the long game with Pokemon Unite, and could have add-ons already planned for 2022. This is unsurprising, given its immense popularity, even before it was released on mobile less than a month ago.
