Old players have played this game up to this year even though it was released in 2009. Now, players have the chance to play this game again with next-generation features with Bluepoint Games' remake. This remake is universally praised for its loyalty to the original title, even the hidden plotlines there can be found here. These plotlines are told and written very incredibly and it's a shame not everyone who played the game got the chance to discover them.

10 Stockpile Thomas

Stockpile Thomas

Stockpile Thomas is one of the earliest NPCs you will encounter in the game. You will find this character sitting in the main area of The Nexus. Hiding behind his friendly and approachable nature, Stockpile Thomas has a very tragic backstory, one you can uncover as you follow his questline.

Stockpile Thomas will tell you that he used to have a wife and daughter before arriving at the Nexus, which he left behind after the scourge of the demons. Their fate was unknown to him until you stumble upon their dead bodies having from a castle terrace in Boletaria. You can pick up a Jade Hair Ornament from one of these bodies and give it to Stockpile Thomas and he will give you the Ring of Herculean Strength in return.

9 Yuria, The Witch

Demon's Souls PS5 Yuria

You'll have to go through lengths to rescue Yuria. Doing this side quest is not as straightforward as it was in the original version. You will first need to equip the complete Fat Official Set. After you rescue her, she will be found once again in The Nexus, where she'll teach you spells in exchange for demon's souls.

Yuria is a very mild-mannered woman. Despite this, she's the quickest NPC to become hostile if you ever aggro her. She exhibits signs of infatuation towards the main character after you set her free. She practices dark magic and seems to regret this aspect of her, acknowledging the fact that she's been disowned and disliked by many because of this.

8 Biorr, Of The Twin Fangs

Demon's Souls Penetrator Armor

Biorr is an NPC you will encounter in the Tower Knight Archstone. He will be waiting for an imminent savior in his cell located in a dungeon just before the Tower Knight's area. You will need the Iron Ring of Keys, which you can take from a Fat Official before you can open his cell.

Once you set him free, he will be thankful to you before telling you to go on ahead so he can get some sleep (of course). Rescuing this NPC is going to be very beneficial to you later on, as he will help you fight The Penetrator and provide distraction when you encounter the Blue Dragon.

7 Lord Rydell

Lord Rydell from Demon's Souls.

Lord Rydell is one of the few NPCs that has had the misfortunate of being imprisoned in the Prison of Hope. Your interaction with this NPC will vary on your world tendency. You will be able to set him free if the world tendency is Pure White, and he will appear as a Black Phantom if the world tendency is Pure Black.

There are indications that Lord Rydell has a connection with King Allant. People often refer to him as "Little Allant," making others speculate that he is the King's younger brother. In his Black Phanom form, he will drop the Phosphorescent Pole upon death.

6 Sage Freke, The Visionary

Sage Freke

Sage Freke is a powerful magician who somehow found his way imprisoned in the Prison of Hope. When you release him, he will be able to teach you magic spells in exchange for demon's souls.

Sage Freke has devoted his life to studying the dark magic brought upon by the Old Ones. His robes indicate that he used to be a high ranking priest of the Church, before leaving and growing discontent towards them and their beliefs. He gradually becomes obsessed with the dark arts, even going as far as contemplating whether they should eliminate the Old Ones, which are the source of dark magic.

5 Garl Vinland And The Maiden Of Astraea

Demon's Souls Maiden Astraea cutscene.

Garl Vinland is the loyal bodyguard of Maiden Astraea. He is known to take great lengths to protect the maiden from any harm, even accompanying her to the Valley of  Defilement. It is speculated that Garl and the Maiden's relationship goes beyond master and servant.

There are rumors that Astraea had turned into a gruesome demon, transforming the valley into a more vile place than it already was. As it turns out, Astraea has indeed become an archdemon, but her will to do good has helped her maintain her sanity and human form. The maiden did not make this place worse, she was trying to turn it into a haven for lost and wretched things.

4 Ostrava, Of Boletaria

Demon's Souls Ostrava

Ostrava is a man who means well but lacks the skills to fulfill his goals. You first encounter Ostrava early on in the game, surrounded by a pack of Dreglings. It will be your task to rescue him, and you will do so quite often as you encounter him on multiple occasions throughout the game.

Ostrava's real identity is Prince Ariona Allant, son of King Allant. Despite not being skilled in the art of combat, the prince traveled to Boletaria to learn the truth of whether or not the scourge of the demons was his father's doing. Unfortunately, Ostrava eventually discovered the truth of the demons and of his father, prompting him to end his own life in soul form, leaving you his resources so you can put an end to his father's madness.

3 Patches, The Hyena

Patches, The Hyena

Patches the Hyena is a mischievous figure in the world of Demon's Souls, a thief who will trick and lead unsuspecting travelers to their demise just so he can loot their corpses. You will end up being one of those unsuspecting travelers. Unluckily for Patches, the slayer of demons does not fall so easily.

If you decide to let Patches live after confronting him of his betrayal, he will become available as a merchant on The Nexus. While he asks for forgiveness, he will play his deed as nothing more than a practical joke, more playful than fearful. Aside from you, Patches has also fooled the likes of Saint Urbain, leading him and his followers to completely despise the thief.

2 Mephistopheles

Demon's Souls Mephistopheles

Mephistopheles is an NPC questline to follow if you plan on fully embracing a Pure Black Character Tendency. She is a member of the Order of the Soul, a group of individuals who wish to keep the secrets of the Soul Arts for themselves. She initially employs Yurt, an assassin known as the Silent Chief. For you to move forward with Mephistopheles' questline, you'll first have to Kill Yurt.

Mephistopheles will then proceed to give you assassination missions, people who are knowledgeable of the ways of the Soul Arts. Each of these assassinations will give you incredible items and a lot of demon's souls. Once you complete all of her requests, she will then attack you, considering you the last living person outside the order who has knowledge of the Soul Arts.

1 Old King Doran, The Last Hero

Old King Doran

Old King Doran, also known as The Last Hero or the Everlasting One, is one of the final NPCs you will most likely discover in the game. This Old King is a demigod and the founder of Boletaria and is an extraordinarily strong fighter. He was locked away in a crypt by none other than King Allant. Old King Doran holds the Demonbrandt, a sword that grows more powerful the less demonic its wielder becomes.

As a wielder of the Demonbrandt, a counterpart of King Allant's Soulbrandt indicates that King Doran was King Allant's polar opposite.
