Bungie has now confirmed that a recent in-game message announcing that Warlocks won the Guardian Games in Destiny 2 had in fact been sent out by accident. The event in question, running from May 2 to 23, is an annual competition between the three different classes of characters in the ever more popular game, these of course being Hunters, Titans, and Warlocks.

The message was sent out earlier this week to all players, stating that Warlocks had won the event, while instructing everyone to visit the Tower for the Closing Ceremony. "Warlocks won the Guardian Games, 2023! Warlocks win,” the message explained. “Warlocks earned the most medallions and won this year's Games! Visit the Tower for the Closing Ceremony." Since the event still had almost three weeks more to go, players were every bit as quick to question the announcement as could be expected.

Bungie soon issued another statement on social media, acknowledging the message had been sent out in error. "We're aware that an in-game message announcing the winner of Guardian Games was sent out erroneously," the studio said on Twitter. "Guardian Games still have two weeks left and the winning class has not been officially announced yet.”

The Guardian Games presents players with medallions for having completed a variety of different activities which take place throughout the game, in addition to a couple of unique weapons. Whichever class completes the most activities and earns the most medallions gets declared the winner. The event notably features two unique weapons, The Title and Taraxippos. Participating in the Guardian Games also represents the only time that players can earn Heir Apparent and its Catalyst.

The in-game message announcing the winner of the Guardian Games before the event officially ended has sparked no small amount of controversy among the very dedicated community of Destiny 2 players. While some have accused the developer of playing favorites or attempting to manipulate the outcome of the competition, others have simply accepted the explanation given by the studio, continuing to complete activities and earn medallions for their class. The overall sentiment appears to be that mistakes happen. Bungie has not, on the other hand, commented about the matter beyond making its initial statement.
