Now that Destiny 2: Shadowkeep has arrived, there is so much content to dive right into. For new new players this will give them an experience drastically different from what older players will remember with the introduction of New Light, the entirely free-to-play version of the game.

Bungie has been touting their new free-to-play experience for a while now, but it was not exactly clear how different the start would feel for new players until this moment. New players will begin in a time far before current events of the game, choosing their class and customized look, and then waking up in the opening mission from the first Destiny, released in 2014. Take a look below at IGN’s playthrough of the first twenty-five minutes of the New Light experience.

Veteran’s of Destiny 2 will notice the difference immediately. When Destiny 2 first launched players were forced into a chaotic and ultimately failed defense of the Tower on Earth. The warlord Ghaul claimed the place for himself, and players would then work their way through the long campaign until finally returning to the Tower at the end. Now, players begin in a Tower that is perfectly safe and acts as a social hub where players go to collect their missions.

As described before the launch of Shadowkeep, all players will be starting the game off on a level playing field with a power level of 750. New players in the Tower are given a quest chain titled “New Light” that takes them through a bit of everything that the game has to offer, including Strikes, which are similar to dungeons in other MMOs, visit Earth, complete some quests, and for their efforts, see a rise in their power level to 770.

The quest line is a great way for new players to get right into the action, but it is only one path a player can take. They can instead choose to ignore the quest chain entirely in favor of exploring other places, diving into other quests as they see fit, trying out Player-vs-player (PvP) content, and much more.

New players are in a great spot with the release of New Light, and they will be able to experience a tremendous amount of content for free before they may consider purchasing the new content. Some of the most difficult to acquire Exotic weapons, along with new locations and endgame content will require the purchase of Shadowkeep, but that is something that a player can think about after checking out everything else the game has to offer for free.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Google Stadia when it launches in November.
