Destiny 2's 30th Anniversary DLC has quite a few throwbacks to Bungie's older titles. One of the clearest references in this DLC is the Forerunner Exotic Sidearm, sharing the appearance and overall design of the Halo: Combat Evolved Magnum.

And just like the Magnum, the Forerunner hits like a truck. Its use of Special ammo and Exotic perks make this Sidearm an absolute powerhouse in PvE and PvP content. This guide will go over how to complete the Forerunner's Magnum Opus quest, where to find the Anomalous Object tied to this quest, and how to obtain the Forerunner Exotic Catalyst.

Magnum Opus Quest Start

Destiny 2 Forerunner Magnum Opus Quest Start

Similar to the Gjallarhorn quest, you can start the Forerunner's Magnum Opus quest by speaking to Xur at his Treasure Trove after completing your first Dares of Eternity run. He'll give you the Magnum Opus quest through a dialogue prompt, although you can claim it under the "Quests" tab of his inventory should you miss it. To finish this quest, you must be at least rank four with Xur. The Strange Key he gives you is needed for one of Forerunner's quest steps.

Collect Strange Coins

Destiny 2 Dares of Eternity Loading Screen

The first step of Magnum Opus requires that you obtain seven Strange Coins. You obtain Strange Coins by partaking in the 30th Anniversary's Dares of Eternity game mode. Each completion of that mode grants one Strange Coin. There is also a small chance that any Paraversal Haul bundles you open will grant one Strange Coin. Paraversal Hauls drop from Starhorse daily bounties.

Complete Starhorse Bounties

Note: Some players are experiencing crashes during the Cabal and Vex final boss encounters in Dares of Eternity.

For this step, you'll need to complete three Starhorse bounties. Weekly bounty completions from Starhorse give additional progress for this step. You can obtain Starhorse bounties from the Starhorse NPC at Xur's Treasure Trove at the cost of a few Strange Coins per bounty. Each of these challenges will require kills using a certain weapon or ability and a point threshold you'll need to reach during a Dares of Eternity match. Daily bounties require 160,000 points, while weekly bounties require anywhere from 180,000 to 300,000 points.

You can only hold one Starhorse bounty at a time, so this quest step is going to require at least three runs of Dares of Eternity. There aren't many ways to speed up the activity itself, but there are a few things you can do to ensure your team reaches the 160,000 point threshold.

Starhorse Bounty Tips

  • Whenever the Fallen mine encounter occurs, farm the Explosive Shanks that spawn. They count as elites and spawn in droves.
  • Use your Super. The ability changes and plethora of powerups mean your Super comes back exceptionally quick in this mode.
  • Grab Orbs of Power. Each Orb your team grabs gives a tiny amount of score. If everyone is chaining Supers or using the seasonal Thermoclastic Blooming mod, this bonus adds up fast.

Unlock The Way Forward

Destiny 2 Forerunner Magnum Opus Quest Bungie Symbol (1)

If you haven't obtained the Strange Key from Xur yet, do so now. Xur will give players the Strange Key upon reaching reputation rank four with him. Play Dares of Eternity matches to increase your reputation with him.

Once you have the Strange Key, you'll want to exit Xur's Treasure Hoard by walking through the teleporter right of spawn. This will take you to the opening arena in Dares of Eternity. To find the Anomalous Object, you must recreate the seven-column Bungie symbol by lining up parts of the environment.

Here's where you need to go:

  • Turn slightly to your right when you spawn. You should be facing a small cluster of rocks.
  • Walk toward the rocks. Look for a small rock with a stone rectangle jutting out from the top.
  • Stand directly behind this rock, the slab lining up with the vertical structure in the distance.
  • You should now receive an interact prompt. Hold the interact key to open the path forward.

You might need to look at an odd angle to get the prompt to appear. Remember, you're trying to recreate the seven-column Bungie logo here.

Explore The Cave

Destiny 2 Forerunner Quest Cryo Pod Alt

A marker on your HUD will lead you into a small cave located to the right of that vertical structure you were just facing. You'll reach a dead-end with orbs floating in a circular pattern. Hop on one of these orbs to ascend. Climb up a nearby ledge to reach a room with a slanted wall, similar in appearance to the Prophecy dungeon's tunnel opening. Do not fall into the wall. You'll want to climb up the wall, using small platforms adorned with golden accents to climb up.

Destiny 2 Forerunner Quest Cryo Pod

Near the top of the wall, you'll find a vertical chasm with platforms rotating in and out of the walls. Hop onto a platform that's active, then wait for the next platform to pop out of the wall. Repeat this until you reach the top. You'll find a cryo pod in this area that looks awfully similar to the cryo-chambers in the Halo franchise. Use your Strange Key to crack the pod open, giving you the frame of the Forerunner Exotic Sidearm.

Bring The Anomalous Object To Banshee-44

Destiny 2 Forerunner Magnum Opus Quest Banshee Dialogue

Now that you have the frame of Forerunner, make your way to Banshee-44 in the Tower. He'll give a dialogue prompt that cheekily references the Halo games before giving you the completed Forerunner Exotic. That's it for the main quest. The only thing left to do is obtain the Forerunner Exotic Catalyst.

How To Obtain The Forerunner Catalyst

Destiny 2 30th Anniversary Xur Vendor

The Forerunner Exotic Catalyst is obtained upon reaching rank 16 with Xur. Speak to Xur once you've reached this reputation rank to claim the Anomalous Card Access item, turning into the Forerunner Catalyst once obtained. From there, you'll need to defeat 700 enemies with Forerunner. These can be PvE or PvP opponents.

Forerunner Stats And Catalyst Effect

Destiny 2 Halo CE Magnum

Not explicitly clear in-game, Forerunner is a Special Kinetic Sidearm that features enhanced hip-fire accuracy. Aiming with this weapon deploys a short-range scope, just like the Halo: Combat Evolved Magnum. The weapon holds 12 rounds in the magazine with 60 in reserves. You start with eight rounds in PvP and recover two ammo from slain Guardians—four if you have a Sidearm Scavenger mod. PvE ammo bricks grant around +20 ammo, similar to how Eriana's Vow works. Sidearm mods, such as Sidearm Targeting and Surprise Attack, work with Forerunner.
