Destiny 2 is no stranger to currency types. Guardians face hundreds of enemies to obtain Masterwork materials, planetary resources, Upgrade Modules, strange consumables, and more common materials like Legendary Shards.

Mod Components were once a rather common material players could find, although the introduction of the Destiny Content Vault has changed this. Many reliable methods of farming Mod Components have been removed, giving players limited options for completing their mod collection via Banshee-44 and the H.E.L.M.'s War Table. Fortunately, there are still a few ways of obtaining Mod Components that take little effort. Let's go over every possible way to obtain Mod Components in Destiny 2.

Updated January 20th, 2022, by Charles Burgar: To help you prepare for The Witch Queen expansion and beyond, we've updated this guide to include a section that discusses the best way of obtaining Mod Components currently. If you're willing to farm Dares of Eternity, you can earn a large sum of Mod Components in a short period. We've also made some slight tweaks to the guide to make it easier to navigate.

How To Earn Mod Components

Destiny 2 Mod Components

With the sunsetting of many vendors and activities in Beyond Light, Mod Components have become much more sparse. The shift from consumable mods to a reusable system has also made dismantling mods no longer an option. Regardless, there are currently three ways that you can obtain Mod Components:

Method

Type

Amount

Banshee-44 Dailies

Bounty

Dismantling Y1 Gear

Gunsmith Bounties

Destiny 2 Gunsmith Bounties

Mod Component Amount: 2 per bounty

Banshee-44 sells four daily bounties that each grant two Mod Components as a reward. These bounties are rather easy to complete, tasking you with defeating enemies with certain weapons. Since daily bounties are bound to your character, you can complete up to 12 of these bounties every day if you have three characters, amounting to 24 Mod Components you can earn daily. This is by far the best way of obtaining Mod Components if you can't use the next method.

Dismantling Gear And Mods

Destiny 2 Mod Component

Mod Component Amount: 1 per dismantled item (weapons aren't guaranteed to drop a Mod Component)

Despite what the Mod Components description states, current Legendary gear does not grant Mod Components. Dismantling any armor piece that uses the Armor 2.0 system (every armor piece obtained since Shadowkeep) will not give Mod Components. Weapons you obtained from Shadowkeep and beyond follow a similar system, as this was the expansion that made weapon mods reusable. For clarity, we're referring to any gear you obtained from Shadowkeep and beyond, not just gear tied to that expansion.

With that said, Year 1 Legendary weapons grant Mod Components when dismantled. From limited testing, it appears that only weapons give Mod Components; Year 1 armor only gives Gunsmith Materials and Legendary Shards. This allows veteran Destiny 2 players who played during Year 1 to obtain Mod Components by recreating weapons from their collection and subsequently dismantling them. This is a fairly slow way of getting Mod Components, but it's a decent alternative to farming bounties.

Additionally, any deprecated mods in your Modifications tab (found in your Inventory screen) can be dismantled for a Mod Component each. These mods include Transcendent Blessings, retired Leviathan raid mods, Paragon armor mods, Hive raid mods, Fallen raid mods, and spare Sweaty Confetti mods. Veteran players that never dismantled these can do so for a large sum of Mod Components.

The Best Way To Get Mod Components

Destiny 2 Xur and Starhorse

By far the best way of farming Mod Components is by obtaining and dismantling the Sweaty Confetti weapon mod. This mod comes from the Dares of Eternity game mode and Xur's Treasure Hoard in Eternity—both of which were free additions added in the Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack. Completing Dares of Eternity has a chance of giving you this mod. If you don't get it, you can spend Treasure Keys obtained from Dares to purchase spare Sweaty Confetti mods from Xur's Treasure Hoard.

This is arguably the best Mod Component farm because of how common the Sweaty Confetti mod is. Running Dares of Eternity will give you this mod and currency you can use to, you guessed it, purchase more Sweaty Confetti mods. If you hate farming Gunsmith daily bounties and want a good farm, this is your best option.
