Destiny 2: Lightfall has four new Exotic weapons for players to chase, one of which is a Heavy Machine Gun that fires weakening and volatile rounds with a rhythmic cadence. If you're willing to complete a short quest after the campaign, you can get your hands on Deterministic Chaos, a Void LMG that serves as an add-clearing/sustained DPS hybrid.

As with most Exotic weapons in Destiny 2, you'll need to complete a fairly short quest to get your hands on this heavy metal LMG. This guide will showcase how to start the Unfinished Business quest, how to complete every quest step, and we'll give a mission walkthrough for 'What Remains,' the last quest step tied to acquiring Deterministic Chaos.

Updated March 11, 2023: We've updated this article to include a video guide that breaks down everything you need to know about getting the Deterministic Chaos Exotic LMG in Destiny 2: Lightfall.

How To Start Unfinished Business

Destiny 2 Lightfall Cloudstrider

'Unfinished Business' is given by Nimbus upon completing the Lightfall campaign. You can beat the campaign on either Normal or Legendary. Once the campaign is over, grab the quest from Nimbus. You'll pay your respects to Rohan in the Hall of Heroes before the actual quest begins.

Collect Cipher Qubits

Destiny 2 Guardian Fighting Wyvern On Neomuna

This is hands-down the most convoluted part of this quest. The quest states that you need to earn qubits by defeating Vex enemies to gain Rohan's data from Cloud Accretions. Here's what you actually need to do: for this quest step, kill 40 Vex on Neomuna, grab the pickups they drop, then harvest 5 resources on the destination. That's it. It's that simple.

Every Vex enemy you'll kill will drop a resource on their corpse, similar to how resource patrols work. This is a qubit. You need to collect 40 of them. You can typically find a ton of Vex in Neomuna's Vex Incursion Zone, a hotspot for Strand that rotates on the destination. Use the Neptune map to deduce where the incursion zone is. Fireteam members also spawn qubits on kill, so consider joining other players for this step.

Once you have enough qubits, you'll need to extract five resources (called Cloud Accretions) on Neomuna. Equip a resource scanner mod on your Ghost to mark all nearby resources. Grab five Cloud Accretions to finish this quest step.

Locate The Final Data Packet In Maya's Retreat

Destiny 2 Neptune FInal Data Packet Vex Pillar

Your next objective is to get Rohan's final data packet from Maya's Retreat, an isolated part of Neomuna that's connected to Liming Habor. The location is marked on your map and quite easy to reach. Once you arrive, interact with the Vex pylon at the center of the pond. This will spawn a few waves of Vex you'll need to fend off. Kill the Vex and interact with the Vex structure once again to finish this step.

Retrieve A Vex Compass

Destiny 2 Neptune Gaming Arcade Lost Sector

After speaking with Nimbus and Osiris, they will direct you to clear out the Thrilladome Lost Sector in Liming Harbor. This is a gaming arcade that is packed with Vex enemies. Bring a good close-range weapon for this section. Clear out the enemies, loot the Lost Sector chest, then make your way to Ahimsa Park.

Create Chaos In Ahimsa Park

Destiny 2 Lightfall Neomuna City Under Attack

Once again, the wording of this step isn't quite indicative of what you need to do. For this step, you'll need to defeat 100 Cabal enemies in Ahimsa Park using your abilities. The subclass you pick for this doesn't matter, so here's what we recommend:

  • Hunter: Use Arcstrider. Combination Blow and a One-Two Punch Shotgun makes short work of the Cabal.
  • Titan: Use Sunbreaker. Throwing Hammer with Synthoceps and Roaring Flames deals absurd damage. Use your hammer to kill a Cabal unit, grab the hammer off the floor, and repeat.
  • Warlock: Use Dawnblade. You can use Sunbracers or Starfire Protocol to gain infinite grenades. Sunbracer users use Incinerating Snap's Ignite proc to gain infinite Solar Grenades, and Starfire users can use Witherhoard and Empowering Rifts to gain infinite Fusion Grenades.

Find The Seed Of Silver Wings

Destiny 2 Lightfall Shadow Legion

This step is quite simple. Follow the waypoint on your map to reach the Seed of Silver Wings. Defeat the Cabal guarding the zone, then head to the collection of vases on the side of the arena to find the seed. Return to Nimbus to unlock the final quest step.

Complete What Remains

Destiny 2 What Remains Mission Start

'What Remains' is a unique mission that can be started on the path to Maya's Retreat. The mission itself is quite simple, requiring you to find Nimbus in the Garden of Salvation raid. Luckily all of Garden's raid mechanics have been stripped out here, but don't expect this to be a cakewalk. Before starting the mission, bring a good mid-range weapon and a Void subclass. You'll want a way to gain Volatile Rounds for later.

The start of this mission will pit you against a small army of Vex. Use the nearby trees for cover as you pick at the targets from a distance. Your Power Level isn't restricted in this zone, unlike Neomuna, so you should be able to kill the Cyclops and Hydra units with ease. When finished, you'll want to make your way to the spinning Vex wheel at the other side of the field.

Destiny 2 What Remains Spinning Vex Wheel

Your goal is to make your way down and across to where the waypoint is leading you. Follow the edge of the wall to find a path through the spinning Vex wheels. You want to avoid using the spinning platforms here; they will take you back up to the start of the level. If you ever feel stuck, look for platforms above or beside you to jump on.

Destiny 2 What Remains Destroying The Barrier

You'll eventually be caught in a rotating tunnel that's blocked off by a Hydra and Supplicants. Defeat the Vex adds first to get your hands on a laser weapon. With the laser, shoot the angled squares floating behind the wall to destroy the barrier. This mechanic is repeated for this entire section, so keep your eyes peeled for these angles surfaces whenever you see a barrier.

Taken will begin fighting the Vex near the central conflux. Follow the trail of Taken enemies as you fight your way out. If you've played Garden, you're backtracking to the jumping puzzle. Clear out all the enemies to reveal a path.

Destiny 2 What Remains Blight Section

This next section requires you to destroy three Taken Blights. You shouldn't have many issues doing this. Use Strand or a movement Exotic to easily navigate the floating platforms to reach each Blight. Beware of the Taken Ogres that dot the zone, as they can push you off the map with a couple eye beam projectiles. Destroy the Blights, enter the portal that opens afterward, then follow the waypoint to reach Nimbus.

Destiny 2 Nimbus Kneeling Over Deterministic Chaos

Nimbus has found a piece of Cloud Strider tech you can use to finish your mission. Grab the weapon and equip your newly-found Deterministic Chaos Machine Gun. Nimbus will leave after reflecting on their actions, leaving you with an army of Vex and Taken to clear out. Cleave through the Taken and Vex using your newly-found Machine Gun. Void users can proc Volatile Rounds to drastically improve this gun's add-clearing potential.

The end of the level will require you to defeat a Vex Hydra that's protected by barriers. Use your weapons to defeat the Vex, grab the laser cannons they drop, then use those cannons to destroy the death barriers. Damage the Hydra until the barriers appear, then repeat the process. When the Hydra is dead, speak to Nimbus back on Neomuna and visit the Hall of Heroes to finish this quest.
