Most Exotic weapons in Destiny 2 have an Exotic Catalyst that can be obtained from certain activities. MIDA Multi-Tool has the most notorious Catalyst of the bunch, tasking players with winning Competitive Crucible matches for a chance of earning it.

Earning MIDA's Catalyst is a lengthy process that's filled with tough PvP matches. If nothing else, finding and completing this Catalyst is arguably the hardest Exotic Masterwork Guardians can complete in Destiny 2 currently, and it gives players a reason to jump into the Glory playlist. Here's a brief guide on how to earn the MIDA-Multi Tool Catalyst and what it does.

Updated September 2nd, 2021, by Charles Burgar: The MIDA Multi-Tool Catalyst has changed since we last wrote this article. Its original Outlaw perk has been replaced with No Distractions, a perk that counters flinch after ADSing for a moderate period. It's a great buff for MIDA considering it already has a fantastic reload speed stat, making this Catalyst more valuable than ever before. We've updated this short guide with additional tips and information about how you can obtain this Catalyst as quickly as possible.

How To Obtain The MIDA Multi-Tool Catalyst

Destiny 2 MIDA Multi-Tool

You must win Crucible matches in the Glory playlist to obtain the MIDA Catalyst. The drop chance increases as you increase your Glory rank.

MIDA's Catalyst has the following drop chances after winning a match in the Glory playlist:

  • Fabled: 5% chance
  • Mythic: 10% chance
  • Legend: 100% chance (guaranteed)

Emphasis on winning there. If you lose a game and get deranked, your drop chance will also decrease to the values listed above. Reaching Legend might guarantee the Catalyst on your next win, but you'll still need to win your next Competitive PvP game at 5,500 Glory. For most, that's a big ask.

Competitive Tips

The Glory playlist utilizes skill-based matchmaking instead of connection-based matchmaking, meaning every game will demand your full attention. Have patience, take breaks if you start to lose, and consider finding a fireteam to make earning the Catalyst a little easier. If you only play solo, fire up the Freelance playlist instead, pitting you against solo players like yourself.

As for more specific tips:

  • Play with your team: Even if you're Freelance, playing with your team in mind is key to winning tougher matches. This can involve zoning, flanking, team-shotting, or assisting your team in taking Heavy ammo. Winning a 1v3 is tough to pull off, so don't put yourself in those situations by ignoring your team.
  • Fight near cover: Bad positioning is punished in Competitive Crucible more than in most PvP modes. Duel near a piece of cover to have an escape route when combat goes south.
  • Play during the weekend: Pro PvP players will spend most of their time in Trials of Osiris from Friday to Monday. Playing Competitive matches on the weekend will result in easier games on average.
  • Embrace the meta: When you reach Mythic, you'll start getting matched against skilled PvP opponents that'll be tough to beat. At this stage, you'll need a deep understanding of the meta. Currently, 120 RPM Hand Cannons are frequently used. You can either use a 120 Hand Cannon or use a loadout that counters it (using Pulse Rifles, Snipers, et cetera). Understand the meta and embrace it.

Masterwork Objective

Once you've obtained the Catalyst, you'll need to land 250 precision final blows against Guardians in the Crucible. This doesn't have to be done in the Competitive playlist, mind you. It just needs to be a playlist in PvP.

As for specific tips, you'll want to distance yourself as much as possible when using MIDA. This weapon is fantastic at shutting down opponents from range, but you'll struggle if you get hit by a Hand Cannon or Pulse Rifle first. Momentum Control is the best playlist to farm this objective, although it's not always available. Normal Control, Iron Banner, and even Rumble are solid options if you play to MIDA's strengths.

What The Catalyst Does

MIDA's catalyst grants the No Distractions perk, drastically decreasing incoming flinch upon aiming-down-sights for a few seconds. For MIDA, this Catalyst allows you to lane and duel opponents much more easily since your aim will flinch much less than your opponent. So long as you can land headshots, No Distractions will ensure that your weapon's time-to-kill is as low as possible. You can also stack No Distractions with Unlinching Scout Rifle mods on your chest armor to effectively remove flinch from the equation altogether.
