With three years of updates and expansions released for Destiny 2, the game has received over double the amount of locations to explore since it released. Each location comes with unique Strikes, Lost Sectors, and hidden lore for players to find.

Not all of the planets added have been a home run, though. From lacking content to being way too small, some Destiny fans have their personal list of favorite locations and planets they loathe. Whether it has been in the game since launch or was recently included, every location in Destiny has its own story to tell, for better or worse. Here are all of the planets in Destiny 2 ranked against each other from worst to best.

9 Io

During Destiny 2's launch, players had to finish the entire Red War campaign to use Sparrows on any planet. This was a large issue because certain planets were built around players using Sparrows for traversal.

Io is one such planet, containing massive pathways for your Sparrow and little to explore. This moon of Jupiter is small, looks downright ugly at times due to the yellowish-green color of the terrain, and has very little secrets to uncover. Besides the Whisper of the Worm mission, there is no reason to go to this planet.

8 Titan

Not to be confused with one of the playable classes in the Destiny franchise, Titan is a moon of Saturn that is a massive body of water.

Out of all of the planets in Destiny 2, none provide a sense of scale as well as Titan does. This planet contains a few oil derelicts and landing platforms strung together with ancient bridges. The star of the show if the planet's massive boat that lies dormant, presumably housing millions of humans during the Golden Age. So why is Titan so low on the list? There's nothing to do here. No secrets, one Strike, and unsubstantial Lost Sectors make this zone not worth playing through.

7 Mercury

Before "Season of Dawn" released for Destiny 2, Mercury would have been the lowest entry on this list. Thankfully, Bungie gave some quality of life updates to this planet that make it fun to explore.

For those who don't know, this planet didn't allow players to use their Sparrows for the first two years of the game's lifespan. Considering how small the planet is, it made doing Lost Sectors or Strikes even more infuriating and felt like needless padding. Now, it is possible to use your Sparrow to explore this small planet. While the Infinite Forest is somewhat boring, the Strikes on Mercury are mostly fun to play and the Lost Sectors are fantastic.

6 Mars

The original Destiny included Mars as one of its main locations, but the massive structures of that planet went largely unexplored.

Bungie decided to bring us back to Mars with the "Warmind" expansion for Destiny 2, but this time redirect the setting to the polar ice caps on the planet. Ice Hive are a unique variant on the tough faction that slows players when they hit you, making spacing more important than ever. The Strikes here are fantastic, the Lost Sectors are fun but short, and Escalation Protocol is one of the most enjoyable additions to the open world Destiny has seen in a long time.

5 Moon

The Red Legion might have hit Earth and nearby planets hard in vanilla Destiny 2, but it seems they forgot the Moon existed.

During the events of both Destiny games, the Hive began creating a massive fortress called the Scarlet Keep while harnessing the power of the Darkness. "Shadowkeep" showed players the severity of the situation, letting players explore the classic location once again with new areas, revamped Lost Sectors that resemble smaller Strikes, and even has a Dungeon in the fortress that's fun to play through. Its lacking story prevents it from competing with the series' best locations, however.

4 Nessus

Red fauna and towering trees encompass Nessus, a planet overrun by Vex and Cabal alike. Based on visuals alone, this is arguably the prettiest planet in the Destiny franchise.

Unlike most planets, Nessus also has a secondary planet, or rather a giant ship, tied to it. The Emperor of the Cabal has his Leviathan ship stationed on Nessus, allowing players to play the Menagerie game mode from "Season of Opulence" and a whopping four Raids, three of which are smaller lairs. Nessus also contains a couple of Strikes, engaging Lost Sectors, and a great looking open-world armor set.

3 Tangled Shore

Destiny 2's "Forsaken" expansion had a unique setting and tone that no other Destiny expansion has replicated. It had a mix of a spaghetti-western and high-fantasy that made the expansion stand above most others.

This is mainly thanks to the beautiful Tangled Shore. Purple skies light the dull rocks that are strung together with cables and ship debris. The enemies here are Scorn, corrupt Fallen that will stop at nothing to kill you. Uldren's Barons and the main story here make the Tangled Shore one of the best locations in the franchise. Its blend of western-inspired locals with Destiny's fantastical elements and the Hive's Gothic themes make this location a treat to play through.

2 European Dead Zone (Earth)

Originally planned to be a location in the original Destiny, the European Dead Zone finally released with the launch of Destiny 2. The wait was certainly worth it.

No other planet in the franchise can compete with the size of the EDZ. It includes a small town, dam, various locations surrounded by forests, a hidden Black Armory forge, and even a Cabal ship you can explore! The number of secrets to uncover, Lost Sectors to loot, and Strikes to play rivals what two planets combined could provide. This location even has a unique hub town called The Farm! It is here that players can also start the nostalgia-filled Thunderlord Exotic Quest and uncover the coordinates of the revered Outbreak Perfected Pulse Rifle.

1 Dreaming City

The Dreaming City combines the secrets players enjoyed from Destiny's Dreadnought and combined with the epic scale of The Lord of the Rings.

There is no way to describe just how epic in scale and scope the Dreaming City is. Created as an endgame planet for veteran players, the Dreaming City surprised players in "Forsaken" with its labyrinth of portals, rooms, and a plethora of secrets. The Raid here is one of Destiny's best, and the completion of the Last Wish Raid physically changed the Dreaming City. As a result of that Raid completion, the city changes every week with an ever-growing curse, opening a portal to The Shattered Throne dungeon when the curse reaches its peak. This planet is perfect. It's beautiful, filled with content, and is teeming with lore. This is easily the best planet in Destiny 2.
