Destiny 2 and its developer Bungie are both in a weird spot right now. The developer is recently single and is now self-publishing and developing Destiny 2's expansions without Activision overseeing them. Bungie's also likely in the very early stages of development on Destiny 3 as well. Every year players expect a brand new expansion for Destiny games and in 2019 they'll be getting their hands on Shadowkeep, which has players returning to the Moon, a location they haven't visited since the first Destiny. Let's take a look at everything known about Destiny 2's Shadowkeep expansion.

Destiny 2's Shadowkeep DLC expansion will be releasing on September 17th, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and on PC exclusively via Steam. This is the same day as the free-to-play version of Destiny 2 launches titled New Light. The mid-September release lines up with when Bungie normally releases their end-of-year expansions. It also happens to be only 4 short days after the release of the highly-anticipated Borderlands 3. If you're a fan of both franchises it seems like September's going to be a very busy month.

At $35 it may not seem any different than the previous expansions released by Bungie for Destiny 2, but the focus on letting players jump in how and where they want to makes this a better deal. Moving forward Bungie stated you won't have to grind through, or own, previous DLC expansions.

With the Shadowkeep DLC expansion players will get the chance to get their hands on 4 new exotic weapons. The new exotics will feature a sniper, hand cannon, trace rifle, and heavy bow. The weapons were teased during the reveal of Shadowkeep and despite not having any names, players were teased with what they were capable of. The heavy bow can knock enemies back via explosive arrows, the hand cannon was pitched as a one-handed sniper, and the trace rifle will create a big critical hit spot for you and your squad.

By pre-ordering any version of the DLC expansion Shadowkeep for Destiny 2 will net players an exclusive weapon as well as an ornament for that specific weapon. You'll get your hands on the Two-Tailed Fox exotic rocket launcher, as well as a hive-themed ornament to give it some style. Players will not only get these two items for pre-ordering, but they'll also receive the base game with Curse of Osiris and Warmind DLC, which are weird additions considering these three things will be free for everyone in Destiny 2's free-to-play release, New Light.

They've stated that it will prey on player's through psychological elements and there's an emphasis on fear. It will feature ghosts of past foes and seems to shed light on how they've returned from the depths of defeat.

The Collector's Edition of Destiny 2: Shadowkeep will cost $150 and features plenty of exclusive items, as well as everything in the deluxe edition which had an emote, emblem, ghost shell, and the season pass. The Collector's Edition additional adds another emblem, the original soundtrack, a Lunar Mission handbook, lore journal, and a hive crypto glyph replica. Collector editions of games are usually worth it for diehard fans of the franchise no matter what's included. Unless you're a huge fan of Destiny 2's lore and/or the hive this may be a tough sell for many people.

4 RPG Elements

via pcgamesn.com

Despite often avoiding the terms MMO and RPG Bungie has now embraced both acronyms and seems to be refocusing on both of these elements that make Destiny 2 special moving forward. Fans have wanted the ability to take their ugly armor with great stats and turn them into pieces that are aesthetically pleasing. Though they're not calling it transmogrification, Bungie is giving players this ability in Shadowkeep. Additionally, a brand new armor type called Artifacts will also be added to the game providing another point of customization for Destiny 2 players.

3 New Destiny Entry Point

Going independent has provided Bungie with the opportunity to sit down, reflect, and figure out what's best for them moving forward. They've announced that a new priority for them is giving people a new and easier entry point to jump into Destiny 2.

Because of this Bungie will be releasing a free-to-play version of Destiny 2 titled New Light, which includes both the Curse of Osiris and Warmind DLC on September 17th, 2019. Additionally, Bungie said that moving forward you won't need every previous piece of DLC in order to jump into the latest release.

2 New Raid & Dungeon Details

Destiny 2 Garden of Salvation Start

Shadowkeep will be adding a new raid experience as well as a new dungeon. The raid will be a new six-player adventure taking place in the Black Garden. It was the alternate realm that was home to the Vex towards the end of the campaign in the first Destiny game. If the Dreaming City's Shattered Throne is any template, then there's a rough outline of what to expect with Shadowkeep's new dungeon. It will likely be a 3-player mini raid and will likely take place on the moon. Sadly, there aren't any current details known about the dungeon so speculation is rampant.

1 Cross-Save

via inverse.com

With Bungie now becoming an independent publisher and parting ways with Activision, they now have the freedom to make Destiny 2 cross-save across all platforms. Many people misinterpret this as cross-play, but cross-save allows you to transfer characters stats and progress between multiple platforms. It doesn't mean you can play with your friend on PlayStation 4 while you're on an Xbox One. Cross-save is a welcome addition for fans who own the game on multiple platforms and is a step in the direction of cross-play, provided Sony/PlayStation finally plays nice.
