Deus Ex fans have been waiting almost six years for even a shred of information about the next title in the series. Square Enix's surprise move of selling off its western studios only eclipsed whatever little hope fans had of seeing Adam Jensen and the game's dystopian world again. However, it seems that selling off of these studios may actually result in a revival of the futuristic action RPG.
According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, there have been rumblings that Eidos Montreal may be looking to return to the series. He noted on his Game Mess Mornings podcast that there have been internal discussions of getting back to Deus Ex, but nothing has been decided as of yet (thanks GamesRadar).
"It's early. The rumbling I've heard is that the studio wants to immediately get into Deus Ex, he said. "They want to get right back into that. They want to challenge - they want to do what Cyberpunk 2077 couldn't, and stuff like that. That's the word going around. We'll see if that happens. It's so early, like what that will turn into. But there was no possibility for that conversation to begin under the current Square Enix, right?"
While it won't be very hard to top Cyberpunk 2077, it's unlikely that we'll be hearing anything official any time soon. Also, Grubb noted that these are merely discussions as of yet, with a possibility not working out in the future. In fact, even Jason Schreier told those looking forward to any Deus Ex news to temper their expectations, as Eidos Montreal is currently busy focussing on other projects at the moment.
"Keep your expectations in check," he said on ResetEra. "The game furthest in development at Eidos Montreal right now is a new IP. If they release a new Deus Ex it won't be for a very, very long time."
While it's unclear whether this has been prompted by Square Enix's decision to sell the western studios – that too, at such a low price – Eidos Montreal founder, Stephane D'Astous believes it was done so in order to prepare for a potential deal with Sony.
