Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat has been in production since 2017 and aims to bring everything fans love about the main series to mobile platforms. After nearly three years, the mobile title has still not seen its release, but that has not deterred loyal fans. The title's pre-registration count recently hit 500,000 and new trailers have since surfaced revealing more insight into gameplay.

Yunchang, a Chinese game developer is working on the mobile title under heavy supervision from Capcom, the main series' developers. The mobile title has been in production since 2017 and was set to release in 2019. However, Yunchang delayed the release until sometime in 2020 when it will be made available in China. The game's debut has likely been delayed in order for the developers to meet Devil May Cry's high gameplay standards.

The Same Stylish Gameplay

Lightening speed hack-and-slash maneuvers will return in the mobile adaptation. Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat seeks to uphold the series unrestrained fighting style by incorporating the same strategy and skill combo mechanics players have grown accustomed to on consoles. Yunchang claims the game reproduces mechanics such as switching weapons, demonization, and combat scoring along with other core mechanics to familiarize the interface.

Yunchang - "Players in the game level through attacks, avoidance, jumping and floating, defensive counterattack, switching weapons and other operations to obtain the "Gorgeous Score" level."

Trailers have depicted gameplay of Dante switching between his various weapons, and Yunchang promises more characters and weapons will gradually be released upon the game's launch. Brief clips within some of the trailers suggest focus may be placed on Virgil and Lady as well.

Storyline

There hasn't been much revealed in terms of the plot just yet, however, the developers claim it will keep in line with the main series storytelling.  This claim is supported by the news that Capcom has also been overseeing the story development. Yunchang states Pinnacle of Combat will incorporate classic scenes, weapons, and characters both good and bad from the main series. Snippets within the various promotional trailers seem to draw heavily from Devil May Cry 3 while incorporating landscapes reminiscent of Fortuna from Devil May Cry 4 and even the amusement park from the series' reboot.

Yunchang - "The story background of Devil May Cry-Battle for the Peak [Pinnacle of Combat translation] follows the world view of the original Devil May Cry series...When Virgil and Dante were young, his mother was unfortunately killed in the war involving the Devil. After the incident, Dante began to hate the demon bloodline and devote himself to [fighting] the devil, while Virgil hated his weakness and [persued] demon power. The twin brothers took the opposite path, and the two broke apart with their swords stretched out."

This focus on the series' origins may suggest a storyline centered around the brothers again, or perhaps the plot will offer further background on the main characters. The timeline could possibly be set earlier in the series, however, this is all speculation at the moment. Nothing has been confirmed as to what Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat's plotline will entail, but we remain hopeful that it will be just as intriguing as other installments in the franchise.

Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat is available for pre-registration on iOS and Android devices, though the cost is yet to be determined. In all likelihood, the game will follow suit of other popular mobile adaptations such as Call of Duty: Mobile, offering a free-to-play experience with in-app purchases. However, this is merely speculation — Capcom is yet to declare an official statement on pricing.

Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat now has an official release date set to launch first for the China market in 2020, however, there is no word yet on a Western release date. Capcom is ensuring high standards upheld by the main series installations are met on the mobile platform, likely causing the launch delay. Players are told to expect the same battle and storytelling quality with appearances from many main series characters and famous weapons. With little information regarding how the mobile title will maintain the game's complex functions and less known about the content of the story, fans will just have to wait and see if Pinnacle of Combat can live up to its lofty expectations.
