15 Ape Out

Ape Out Fighting In Room

Simple, stylish, and jazzy. Ape Out is a not-so-standard beat ‘em up that will give you a whole new perspective on the genre. This top-down title puts you in the role of an ape held captive - though as you may have guessed, not for long.

You’ll smash and crash your way through each level, fighting armed guards and measures to stop you from getting out. All the while, dynamic jazz music will be playing in time with everything you do - calm when you’re sneaking, only to have symbols and drummers kick off the beat when you throw an enemy against a wall.

14 Pikuniku

This game is certainly odd, but its simplicity is its greatness. Pikuniku is a game that anyone can play, with plenty of areas to explore, secrets to uncover, and minigames to take part in. The game isn’t too long either, and even features some local co-op activities to take part in.

While it may not look like it on the surface, it’s actually a fantastic game for humor as well. The pacing and jokes across the short-and-sweet journey are genuine and hilarious at times, and it is definitely worth picking up - it’s no surprise that Devolver Digital backed this one.

13 Return To Monkey Island

Fans of Monkey Island waited a long time for another entry in the series, but along came Return To Monkey Island to deliver the experience fans had been longing for. Even as a newcomer, you can easily enjoy this game with little-to-no knowledge, and can always find summaries online to help you.

Return to Monkey Island is not only a return to the series itself, but to the classic era of point-and-click games and the joy that came with exploring them, as you discover secrets and solve puzzles.

12 Heave Ho

If you’re looking for a game to play with a few friends in couch co-op, then Heave Ho should be at the top of your list. With every player in the form of a strange creature with no limbs aside from two long arms, your movement will be reliant on your ability to grab and swing.

The general aim of the game is to get to the end of each obstacle-littered level without falling to your death. Levels also feature a shiny coin for you to collect, though you will have to grab and hold onto it, all the while getting it and yourself - team included - to the end of the level. You can’t go wrong with this one.

11 Hotline Miami

Hotline Miami character with enemies all around him

This top-down, arcade-style shoot ‘em up is renowned by fans of high-octane violence and classic video game action. Set in the game’s own version of Miami in 1989, you will go on murderous rampages as you set out to destroy criminal underworlds without really knowing why.

The levels are fast-paced and will require you to master their layouts in order to come out unscathed. You’ll be shooting enemies room after room, but they are sure to be shooting back, so act quickly and go for the high score. The story and characters are bizarre, but it makes for an incredibly fun game to delve into.

10 Inscryption

What if you had a fantastic card game to play, but it was in an incredibly creepy, unknown location against an even creepier, unknown being? Well, that's Inscryption. With plenty to please fans of card games and fans of horror, this title took both genres by storm.

You'll spend most of your time building a deck and playing against a shadowy figure, while strange goings-on continue around you. The eeriness of the experience, and the ability to explore the locations you're in to uncover the mysteries of what is going on - well, let's just say it can keep you busy for quite some time.

9 The Messenger

The Messenger character jumping over enemies at night

An action platforming game inspired by Ninja Gaiden, The Messenger will see you take the role of a surviving ninja traveling across a branching world with the task of delivering a scroll. You’ll unlock upgrades and new abilities as you go, and will return to once-visited areas with the means to reach new places.

The unique feature of The Messenger is its ability to shift between time periods. The game will feature 8-bit graphics and audio while in the past and changes to 16-bit when in the future. This makes for some excellent dynamic changes as you play, and requires you to think outside the box.

8 Death’s Door

A later addition to Devolver’s growing list of indie titles, Death’s Door is a game about an order of crows who act as the grim reapers of the world. They open doors between realms and take the souls of those who are assigned.

After the first game’s success, OlliOlli 2 took everything great from the original and made it even better, all while throwing in plenty of new mechanics and features. The cleaner style of the game made for some truly enjoyable environments, and skateboarding never felt better.

With plenty of new and challenging levels, OlliOlli 2 pushed players further than ever before, reaching combos of new heights and clearing objectives once thought impossible. The OlliOlli franchise only gets better, and fans of skateboarding or arcade games should not pass this one up.

6 Weird West

Weird West A Friendly Face side quest.

Weird West drops you into a dark and twisted world of cowboys and monsters. This supernatural adventure places you in the shoes of five different characters, as you discover their stories and see what links them all together in an overarching plot.

With the usual Wild West settings you could expect, they are freshened up with cultists, magic, and creatures that will stalk and overwhelm you as you delve into the deepest corners of the world. Be wary, as this is a deep RPG with plenty of choices, and it will not forgive the mistakes you make.

5 My Friend Pedro

A man wakes up, locked up, with no memory of where he is or what’s going on. That’s okay though, as the talking banana will bring you up to speed and have you killing waves of criminals and bounty hunters in no time.

My Friend Pedro is a strange but extremely fun side-on action game that has you learning about your past, fighting off people after your head, and perhaps hoping to understand what this banana is and why you can talk to it. Devolver Digital has a reputation for the bizarre, and My Friend Pedro is an easy recommendation.

4 Enter The Gungeon

What do you play once you've finished Enter the Gungeon? Exit the Gungeon, of course! The smaller sequel to this fantastic indie game takes the bullet hell chaos to a 2D elevator, as you fight your way to survive going up to the surface once more.

It may not be as grand or as complex as Enter the Gungeon, but it'll scratch that itch if you've already had your fill of the original game. Better yet, you can even grab the game on iOS through Apple Arcade, making it a fun little experience to hop into wherever you are.

2 Cult Of The Lamb

Lamb surrounded by animal followers in Cult of the Lamb

A game that had almost everyone hooked from its initial announcement, Cult of the Lamb sees you take the role of a little lamb as you lead and grow a cult of animal residents. How you do so is up to you.

Will you try to take care of your people and invest in what feels right? Or will you sacrifice those who follow you and do what's best for yourself? Either way, this dark and charming game is an excellent experience, and easily one of the best in Devolver's library.

1 Katana Zero

Great story? Check. Excellent music? Yup. Addicting gameplay? Of course. Katana Zero is an experience unlike any other, and has so much to it that it’s hard not to recommend it to anyone. The 2D action game sees you playing as a modern Samurai in a neon metropolis, working as an assassin with the ability to slow down time.

You’ll take on a whole level of enemies, working quickly to avoid detection and demise. If you die, the game rewinds to the start of the stage - this is your character planning his attempts in his head. The story in Katana Zero goes much further than you may think as well, but if nothing else, the gameplay is exhilarating and the upbeat soundtrack is brilliant.
