Publisher Devolver Digital and Croteam released a new story trailer for Serious Sam 4, which launches on September 24 for Windows PC (via Steam), Google Stadia, and in 2021 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

In the new game, a prequel to Serious Sam 3: BFE, Sam “Serious” Stone and the Alien Artifact Acquisition division of Earth Defense Force are searching for the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail, which is actually an alien artifact. However, Sam and his allies are not alone in their quest, meaning they must circle-strafe and backpedal-blast their way out of treacherous situations as they battle countless enemies.

The new trailer focuses on Sam as he heads up the Earth Defense Force against the invasion led by extraterrestrial overlord Mental, the last of the Hum-Tah, a species of alien gods that once ruled over galaxies. Created by the husband and wife team of Jonas and Verena Kyratzes, Serious Sam 4 is styled as a B-movie with zany characters, an unpredictable plot, and lots of heart.

"The first thing we had to do was make sure it was a Serious Sam story," Jonas said. "We had a lot of conversations with the rest of the team where we just talked about getting the tone right. It had to be funny, but not a parody. It's pulpy but quite earnest."

"The Serious Sam games all require a strategic approach to play well. They're silly and chaotic, but they're not dumb. So we wanted a story that was exactly like that," Verena added.

In the prequel, John J. Dick returns as Serious Sam along with a cast of talented actors, including Erica Lindbeck, Joe Lynch, Zach Valenti, Simon Paisley Day, and Wally Wingert.

Devolver Digital, which is headquartered in Austin, Texas, is having a busy 2020, releasing Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Carrion, and Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead. Meanwhile, Croteam, a Croatian video game developer based in Zagreb, is working on The Talos Principle 2, a follow-up to the 2014 puzzle game, which was also published by Devolver Digital. Upon its release, The Talos Principle received critical acclaim and is considered one of the greatest puzzle games of all time.
