Trigger warning: mentions of sexual assault and harassment.

In the aftermath of the lawsuit filed by the state of California, more former employees of Activision Blizzard have been publicly sharing their own allegations of sexual harassment, sexism, and racism at the company. After days of more stories emerging, with the alleged incidents spanning over a decade, eyes have turned to the current and former management of the gaming giant.

Chris Metzen, co-creator of Blizzard’s Diablo, is the latest ex-higher up to comment on the story. In a statement posted to Twitter, Metzen says, “we [management] failed too many people when they needed us.” He apologizes for “the part [he] played in a culture that fostered harassment, inequality, and indifference.”

Metzen explains that he has been reading the statements from his old employees over the past few days, and admits they were “directly harmed” because he “wasn’t present enough” to hear these stories “when it mattered.”

He closes off the statement saying, “It’s not enough just to say ‘I see you’ and ‘I hear you’ when terrible things happen to women in and out of the workplace. We have to be present enough and willing enough to ASK them what their experiences are day to day - and do everything we can to support them with the respect, dignity, and opportunities they deserve”.

Reactions to the apology have been mixed. Some thank Metzen for making it clear he believes the allegations. However, a lot of the replies cast doubt on his insinuation that he didn’t know about the claims in the lawsuit while he worked there. One response is from another ex Blizzard employee, who says “This statement makes me sick with the hypocrisy of it. You probably don’t even remember this but you are the one who told me I should stick to what I’m good at, which was apparently taking notes and organizing meetings. Way to mentor jr female talent.” She rounds off her reply saying: “Plenty of us who remember you for who you really are. Don’t care if the world thinks you’re a hero.”

Metzen was at Blizzard for 23 years, and in that time worked directly with Alex Afrasiabi, who faces specific allegations in the lawsuit. The lawsuit claims Afrasiabi’s alleged harassment of women was so well known in the office, that his suite was referred to as ‘the Crosby Suite’, [sic] after alleged rapist Bill Cosby.

Some in the replies also call on Metzen to aid the state of California’s investigation into the abuse allegations. Metzen has not made it clear whether or not he will assist the investigation.
