Disney Dreamlight Valley is a life sim and adventure game released by Disney in 2022. Set in a magical valley, you live alongside a wide range of Disney's animated characters, all in need of the help of an adventurer to bring back the memories of their world.

The game combines a story about the disappearance of many of the most beloved Disney characters from Dreamlight Valley with a resource-harvesting life simulator. These two things collide when you enter as a new resident with magical powers. You juggle making friends, destroying dark magic, fulfilling village duties, and trying to unlock various parts of the world of Disney, all as your customized avatar.

This guide is based on early access content and, therefore, is subject to change.

Unlocking Game Functions

At the start of the game, you have to collect the Royal Tools to start harvesting resources and clearing away dark magic. Once this is done, the other functions become available, and these are the key characters to follow to find the tools and unlock game functions:

Character

Functions Unlocked

Merlin

Magic

Scrooge McDuck

Buying, Upgrading, Building, Crafting

Goofy

Selling, Fishing

Mickey

Cooking, Gardening

Once you have unlocked the Magic Castle with Merlin, you can unlock doors to worlds allowing other characters trapped in their pocket realms to join the village.

To unlock other biome areas on the map in Dreamlight:

  • You must progress a friendship quest with Merlin
  • Become level five friends with villagers
  • Clear the magical force and unblock the path.

If you're unsure what a command during these early unlock quests means, head back to the quest giver to ask for a reminder, as they might give more details than they did originally.

Getting Around The Valley

The game's map will show where you are and where the other characters you have discovered are. Select a character to set a glowing path in the world in their direction.

You can fast-travel to wells or worlds in the Magic Castle by selecting any well or the castle on the map.

As you work in the world, you will lose energy, so stay stocked up on food items, or you will have to return to your home to build up energy.

Cooked meals are likely to earn you a higher energy regeneration and can even fill up the bar with double energy.

Working With Friends

Helping characters overcome the ominous 'Forgetting' is the game's key story, and part of doing this means taking on quests to help out the friends you make along the way.

To unlock the friendship quests given by some characters, you might need to have progressed with others. The availability of each character's friendship quest is tracked on the quest menu, which will tell you what level of friend you need to be, and who else you need to be friends with for the quest to unlock.

You can increase your friendship levels through gifts and conversation prompts.

Hanging out will set a friend as your companion, which will level up your friendship with them through working together. You will also get help from the resource gathering bonus you assigned to them when becoming friends.

Set a companion by selecting 'Let's hang out!' when talking to a friendly character.

Collecting And Storage

Your inventory will probably become full quite quickly if you pick everything up, and to expand your backpack, you will need 5,000 coins.

Less expensive ways to deal with this are using storage in your house or frequently selling items at Goofy's stall.

If you have bags or books in your backpack, you can use these. Bags unlock wardrobe and furniture items, and books teach recipes. When opened, you will gain access to the item through other menus, and a spot will be freed in your inventory.

Resource items that are part of a quest will be marked with a dot as important and should be held if you are following that quest.

Getting Dreamlight

The game has areas that require Dreamlight to unlock, and you mainly earn this through completing tasks as they are labeled in your dreamlight menu tab and collecting them from there. You don't need to go to the well to collect Dreamlight.

The daily duties available often contain easier and higher reward tasks, including simple things like taking a photo or conversing with one of the characters.

If you find you're running low on Dreamlight or are low on time, you can use the crafting bench to create Dreamlight from the Dream Shards you collect. However, since this is a rare resource needed for critical quests, you should hold on to most of it.

Wardrobe Change

A neat game feature is the relative freedom of certain customization elements. For instance, you can pair a beard with a feminine body.

Another cool thing is that you can mix two colors in each makeup and hair option to blend them and achieve layered effects.

You can create your own custom designs. Customize items in the wardrobe by going to customize, selecting a base item, and then shaping, coloring, and layering your own design. Save after customizing and find your new item in the customize tab.

Earning Coins

As Scrooge McDuck makes clear, money makes the world of Dreamlight Valley go round, so you will need it to make any improvements to your surroundings or the lives of villagers.

How To Earn Coins

What To Do

Collectible Items

Items that earn a lot of coins include gems, which you can mine from wall deposits once you have a pickaxe, and fish, which you collect from the ponds in the lower field at the start of the game.

Chests

You can find money inside chests that you discover hidden in unexpected places, buried in the ground, for instance.

Clearing The Way

Clearing the dark magic roots that cover the area also often drops coins.
