Now, before I begin critiquing the film, let me just say that I adore Frozen. It’s a super cute Disney film that broke away from a lot of the stereotypes that the company tends to gravitate toward in its royalty films. Elsa and Anna are both unique because they don’t fit the mold of prim and proper women. And of course, we all know why people are so obsessed with Queen Elsa. She’s the very definition of fearless, flawless, and fabulous. “Let It Go” was, and still is, a very empowering song telling listeners to not be afraid to be themselves.

I love Elsa so much that I even cosplay as her. That alone has brought me so close to the character, and of course, it’s always fun to wear her at conventions where little kids run up to you in excitement. And yet, as a journalist, both here and for local news, I have to practice the concept of having no bias. Today, we’re going to critique character traits of Elsa’s and how so much around her character doesn’t make sense whatsoever.

As critical as things may get, I want it known that by no means does writing this article change my love for Frozen or who Elsa is and what she stands for. Frozen isn’t my favorite Disney film, but it’s one that I truly adore for many reasons. For now, let’s discuss some impossible things, like talking snowmen, head injuries, and sewing. Yes. Sewing is mentioned here.

25 How Was She Born With These Magical Powers?

via: rainbownote.deviantart.com

Toward the beginning of the film, it’s revealed that Elsa was born with her magical powers. Now, every Disney fan knows that in most of these circumstances, the royal children are cursed, not just mysteriously born with these talents.

And as far as we’re made aware, Elsa is the only human in existence who possesses these magical abilities.

Surely there’s some type of ancestry involved here. Did a grandparent or great-grandparent pass down these skills? I’m sure Frozen 2 won’t end up telling us.

24 Abilities Include... Dressmaking?

via: ohmy.disney.com

As we’ve seen in a feature-length film and two shorts, Elsa can create dresses with magic. With the first film, it made sense, as the dress strongly resembled ice and snow. But come on. That green and pink dress in Frozen Fever makes zero sense. So she can just make any type of dress now? The poor seamstresses of Arendelle! Elsa just put all of them out of business. But seriously though! Why is dressmaking just a random part of Elsa’s abilities?

23 How Can She Make Things Come To Life?

via Cosmopolitan

When it comes to Disney and magic, there’s never a lot of explaining done. After all, it’s a kid’s film, and Disney doesn’t see the need in explaining how a woman who fears her ice powers can bestow life onto it.

I mean, if she fears her own abilities, why did she think creating life was a good idea?

What if things went bad and her own magical creatures turned against her? I guess she was just never afraid of that possibility.

22 How Did Elsa's Parents Handle Her Colds Before?

via disney.wikia.com

In Frozen Fever, we watch Elsa fight a cold while giving her younger sister birthday presents. But with every sneeze, Elsa creates little snowmen that Olaf refers to as his “brothers and sisters.” So here’s a question for you. This is definitely not the only time Elsa’s been sick. How did they keep all those snowmen locked away so that Anna didn’t know about her sister’s magic? Did Elsa have to watch her creations melt before her eyes? That’s disturbing.

21 How Long Did She Plan On Living Without Food?

via Disney Wiki - Fandom

So, I get it. The “Let It Go” castle sequence is very magical and empowering. We get to see a timid, anxious woman transform into an attractive, confident one. A majestic ice castle is also created. But bear in mind that she went to this mountain and isolated herself.

How did Elsa intend on surviving up there all by her lonesome?

Wouldn’t she eventually have to go back down to Arendelle just for food? Unless there’s something more to her magic powers and she can just up and create gardens, too.

20 Why Did Parents Think Keeping Her Isolated Would Help?

via Rotoscopers

Consider this. At the beginning of the film, the trolls tell the king and queen that fear would lead to great tragedy. Why make Elsa feel like she should be so scared of herself by isolating her away from Anna? To me, it all comes down to acceptance and embracing one’s differences. I get that the parents also want to protect Anna, but making your eldest daughter feel like an outcast isn’t the proper way to go about saving your family.

19 Did Elsa Not Realize She'd Have To Come Out One Day?

via Google Plus

Did Elsa honestly think that she’d be able to rule Arendelle constantly in fear of her own people figuring out her secret? Did she really think that the citizens would be okay with having a fearful queen who could more or less be pushed over had Elsa not revealed her true self? This is just your daily reminder that being yourself is always the best route to take. Don’t hide from responsibility and don’t ever put on a facade in front of others.

18 Elsa Was Able To Create A Castle, But Hurt Anna?

via Frozen 2013 Movie Wikia - Fandom

In all honesty, what is this film’s definition of “control?” Elsa couldn’t control her powers at the coronation or when she injured Anna. How was she able to control them so well that she created an ice castle and made Olaf and Marshmallow?

To me, it seems like creating a building and making life take some practice, which involves some means of control.

For someone who at first is so scared of her own abilities, she can create some pretty incredible things.

17 Did The Gloves Really Work, Though?

via Pinterest.com

I still think the gloves are basically a clothing item used to make Elsa feel like she’s in control of her abilities. After all, her parents did introduce the glove concept very early in her life. Since she was taught at a young age that the gloves would help, even though they really don’t, she basically stuck to them. I think that the reason we don’t see magic through the gloves is that Elsa just has this firm belief that the gloves work.

16 Who Was In Charge Until Elsa Took Over?

via disney.wikia.com

This is a question we Frozen fans have been asking ourselves for a while now. It was three years from the time of the king and queen’s passing before Elsa turned 21, becoming old enough to take over the throne.

So during that time, who exactly was running Arendelle?

As far as I’m aware, in most kingdoms, the next in line immediately takes over. However, that was not the case here. Seriously, though. Who was in charge of Arendelle during that time?

15 She Wants To Protect Anna, And Yet Marshmallow Exists?

via disney.wikia.com

When Anna, Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf find Elsa after she runs away, Elsa tells Anna to leave because she doesn’t want to hurt her. And yet, Elsa’s response to this is to create a giant snow monster to scare Anna away and chase her off the mountain. How is that keeping Anna safe? Wasn’t there a safer way to transport her back to Arendelle and just keep doing that until she gave up? We have to make the plot interesting though, so cue scary monster.

14 Gloves Are Just Fine, But Shoes Aren't?

via disney.wikia.com

This goes back to what I said earlier about the gloves. I truly think that Elsa views her gloves as a safety mechanism that she’s believed in ever since she was young. And yet, not once does it cross her mind that shoes would work the same way.

It’s surprising how much Elsa doesn’t know about her magic, but apparently she knows enough to create life and make a castle.

Okay, got it. Man, the more I write this, the more none of this makes sense.

13 The Trolls Tell Her Parents Fear Will Make Her Powers Worse...

via Disney Wikia - Fandom

In the beginning of the film, the trolls even show the king and queen of Arendelle just what fear could do to the kingdom. This goes back to what I said earlier about keeping Elsa isolated from everybody. Doesn’t that just show Elsa that “Hey, you’re scary because you’re the only one with this magical power? So because of that, we’re locking you away and you can never see your sister again?” To me, that’s plenty of action to make a child fear herself.

12 How Did She Not Know What She Did To Arendelle?

via Disney Fan Fiction Wiki

Elsa ran across the water surrounding Arendelle and took off toward the mountains. Did she really not consider the environmental impact her magic had? Did Elsa really not see the snow falling around her while up in the mountains and wonder about that?

Unless she thought that only the mountainous areas were affected by her magic, but she was very wrong on that.

Elsa, sweetheart. You have a great effect on the climate. Realize that freezing water so suddenly really changes some things.

11 Wait... Dress Decorations?

via: style.disney.com

This goes back to the many statements I’ve already made regarding Elsa’s fashion skills. She just has to be putting all of the town’s seamstresses to shame if she can just make outfits for everybody. Heck, even in the case of Frozen Fever, we see her add embellishments and brightness to Anna’s new dress. Again, I can understand having powers related to ice and snow. But explain this to me. Seriously, I am so confused as to how she can do this?

10 Anna And Elsa Went From 0-100 Really Fast

via: alltime23.deviantart.com

Since Anna was about five, she has had a very strained relationship with her sister. After all, she didn’t end up seeing her again until she was 18.

And yet, even after Elsa ran away, it’s like the sisters were somehow able to become the best of friends again.

I’m sorry, but I have a younger sister. If I didn’t see her for that long, interactions between the two of us would be very awkward, and they would stay that way for quite some time.

9 Does Elsa Have Magical Relatives?

via Disney Wikia Fandom

This also goes back to what I mentioned regarding Elsa being born with her powers. I seriously doubt Elsa was just born with them unless it really is a hereditary gift. But again, if that were the case, wouldn’t one of Elsa’s relatives also have these powers? And if that were the case, wouldn’t they know enough about said relative to understand how to treat their daughter? Nope. This is Disney. You get magic. No explanation is necessary here whatsoever.

8 How Are Townspeople So Blissfully Unaware Of Magic?

via Frozen Wikia - Fandom

To me, it seems like Arendelle is one of those areas that believes in myths and legends. If that were the case, then surely they’d have a tale related to the Hans Christian Andersen story Frozen is based off of? Besides, what exactly is there to fear about snow and ice with these folks? Don’t they live in a Scandinavian country? Sure, it might be scary when it’s Christmas in July, but snow and cold isn’t really something to be afraid of.

7 Why Did She Randomly Build Olaf?

via Pinterest

The very first song Anna sings is “Do You Want To Build A Snowman?” For years and years, Anna sings this song in an attempt to get Elsa to come out of her room and play. However, since Anna’s memories have been erased, she might not realize that building a snowman is in fact triggering bad memories of when Elsa first hurt Anna. But how dare you, Elsa. Anna’s waited so long for that snowman moment, and you did it without her.

6 How Does This Dress Even Exist?

via Disney Wiki - Fandom

I know, I know. I am not shutting up about clothes. But that whole concept of Elsa being able to make her own clothes astounds me. I understand why her first dress transformation exists. The dress makes sense there. It’s the Frozen Fever dress that confuses me really bad. It’s so spring-like and flowery. Isn’t that the complete opposite of what Elsa’s powers can do? And yet she can create a dress that resembles those springtime elements how?
