When you think of cartoons, you think of Disney. The mouse company has been at the forefront of animation for most of its existence. They've helped usher in groundbreaking new methods of creating cartoons at a cheaper and faster rate ever since they basically started the 'Animated Film' revolution with 1937's Oscar-nominated fantasy film 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves'.

Even after branching out into live-action movies and TV shows, Disney has remained firmly at the top of its game, and it's done so by placing emphasis on producing stories that connect with the audience at an emotional level. Disney has always been aware of the fact that making flashy films lacking a strong emotional core results in forgettable cinema that does not stand the test of time.

With the passage of time, and with entire generations of audiences growing up with Disney cartoons, their storylines have grown increasingly sophisticated. Gone are the days when their films looked like a series of short sketches stitched together to make a film. Modern Disney animation has built up a complex lore that crisscrosses with other cartoons the mouse company produces, and sometimes even references outside movies and actual historical events.

Naturally, keeping all that canon straight is an arduous task, and Disney has not always shown consistency in its various storylines. Here are 25 times that Disney cartoons left us confused and wondering if there was an actual plot hole in the movie or simply a mystery that never got completely resolved:

23 Why Did Cinderella Have To Leave The Ball?

via rotoscopers.com

Probably the most famous moment in Cinderella is when, after dancing all night with the Prince, Cinderella looks up and at the clock and realizes that it's almost midnight. Filled with the thought that her fairy godmother's magic was about to come undone, Cinderella dashes away from the Prince's arms, accidentally leaving her glass slipper behind.

But... why did she have to run away at all? She'd already fallen in love with the Prince. Wouldn't it have been better to reveal her true self and hope he accepted her as she was?

22 Why Did Gepetto Leave Pinnochio On His Own?

pinnochio going to school

Gepetto is the guy who carved Pinnochio out of wood. So we can safely say the man was a talented woodcarver. We can also say, based on his behavior, that he was a terrible father.

After discovering that the puppet he had carved out of wood had been brought to life, Gepetto observed that his new son was pretty naive and innocent since he was basically a newborn. Why was Gepetto willing to let Pinocchio travel to school on his own? That solitary school trip is where all of Pinocchio's misadventures started.

21 Why Did The Dwarves Not Seek Outside Help?

seven dwarves and snow white

Near the end of her movie, Snow White is tricked into eating a poisoned apple that put her into a deep sleep. The dwarves were filled with grief after discovering her unconscious figure, since they, along with the audience, think that Snow White is gone.

But then days and weeks pass, and Snow White's body does not decompose at all, like actual bodies that no longer have the spark of life are supposed to do. Why did the dwarves never try to bring a doctor to examine Snow White and hopefully cure her?

20 Why Did The Shoe Only Fit Cinderella?

glass slipper

The end of Cinderella sees the prince mount a massive campaign to find the girl whose foot will fit inside the glass shoe. After scouring the entire countryside, the Prince's men finally discover Cinderella, the only girl whose foot fit the shoe.

...but that's not how shoes work. There should have been many girls with the same shoe size as Cinderella who could all have fit into the glass shoe. And if the godmother had magicked the shoe to only fit Cinderella, why didn't she simply introduce Cinders to the Prince directly instead?

19 Was The Mad Hatter Actually A Villain?

mad hatter

In most remakes of Disney's original Alice In Wonderland, the Mad Hatter is a heroic figure, actively helping Alice defeat her enemies and restore peace to Wonderland. But in the original movie, the Hatter's actions are a lot more sinister.

For one thing, he is shown to be actively violent towards the Dormouse and March Hare. Also, he does not actually do anything to help Alice in her journey through Wonderland. His quirky nature hides a destructive streak that's directed against other characters. Alice simply happens to not be on the receiving end.

18 Why Not Use The Trident To Solve... Everything?

ursula and triton

In The Little Mermaid movie, we see the awesome power of the trident wielded by King Triton, Ariel's dad, which later falls into the hands of the villainous Ursula. Even though Ursula only manages to access 90% of the trident's power, she is able to use it to do all kinds of terrible things.

So why wasn't such a powerful weapon used later in The Little Mermaid TV series to solve 90% of the problems Ariel faced weekly? Triton could have saved his daughter all kinds of grief by using his trident more often.

17 Why Was The Beast Such A Mysterious Figure?

beast

The Beast from Beauty and the Beast is cloaked in mystery at the beginning of the movie. He lives alone in a giant castle that no one seems to know about. Also, he used to be a rich prince with a full attending staff before he was cursed.

So how did he manage to stay unknown? Surely the townspeople would have wondered about the prince living near their village? How about the townspeople who must surely have been related to the prince's staff that got converted into cutlery and other furniture pieces?

16 Why Was Razoul Trying To End Prince Ali?

razoul

Razoul is the head of the palace guards who has a particular dislike for Alladin. When Alladin comes to the palace in the disguise of Prince Ali, son of a powerful, distant ruler, Razoul tries to end his life under Jafar's orders.

Why was Razoul willing to carry out the assassination of an important guest who was there on a diplomatic visit to ask for Princess Jasmine's hand in marriage? He had no way of knowing yet that Prince Ali was actually Alladin in disguise. Wars have been fought over lesser transgressions than attacking a prince.

15 Zootopia's Own Disney World?

disney titles

In a brief cutaway gag in the animal metropolis of Zootopia, we see Duke Weaselton selling bootleg copies of Disney films, only with the main roles being played by animals instead of humans. So a copy of Tangled is now called Wrangled and features the horse Maximus on the cover instead of Rapunzel.

This got us wondering what else is changed in the animal versions of Disney films. We also spot the movie Floatzen 2, which means Zootopia got the Frozen sequel before we did. But who are the squirrels playing Elsa? And Anna? And all the other Disney princesses?

14 Why Was Megara Not Completely Crushed?

megara

Meg was Hercule's girlfriend who was initially working for Hades. But then she fell in love with Hercules for real and betrayed Hades to help him. Megara was crushed by a pillar near the end of the movie, and Hercules had to go into the underworld to retrieve her soul and bring life back to her body.

But see, even if her soul was reunited with her body, her body had still suffered from a massive injury that must have resulted in multiple broken bones at the very least. How'd she recover from those?

13 The Hook Guy Plays The Piano?

rapunzel

This isn't a major point, but rather one of the smaller issues that you can't help but be reminded of once you've noticed it in the first place. In Tangled, Rapunzel coaxes an entire bar full of surly thieves and rapscallions to join her in a rousing song about following your dreams. The impromptu musical is accompanied by a thug with a hook on the piano.

So how is a guy who is missing four digits from one hand able to perform such a complicated piece? Especially since we saw him tear off several keys in the beginning?

12 Who Was Really In Charge Of Arendelle?

arendelle

In Frozen, Anna and Elsa's parents are lost at sea near the beginning of the movie. It then takes Elsa several years before her coronation day arrives, and she is given control of the kingdom of Arendelle. So in those intervening years, there must have been a guy who took care of the kingdom and managed its affairs before passing the crown to Elsa.

So why did the same person not resume control of the kingdom after Elsa left? Why was Hans allowed to take over Arendelle and order the execution of Elsa?

11 An Insult To The Present King

ratcliffe

In Pocahontas, the settlers arrive in Virginia, and Ratcliffe proceeds to claim the land in the name of 'King James I of England'. Except that King James did not have a son at that point, so it made no sense to add the 'I' to his title.

In case you think this was a minor point, it's actually considered hugely disrespectful to refer to any king as 'The First' because that implies that there will come a day when the present king will pass away, and then there will be a 'The Second' king.

10 Why Does The Cop Not Believe Hiro?

hiro and the robot army

In Big Hero 6, we get a scene where Hiro is trying to explain to a police officer that a man wearing a Kabuki mask had attacked him using an army of tiny robots. The police officer clearly doesn't buy any of Hiro's explanations because it all sounds impossibly futuristic.

Except that the technology that Hiro was describing wasn't futuristic by the standards of the movie. All the tech that Hiro described had already been shown to be a part of the university's exhibitions. Why didn't the cop believe the tiny robot army was real?

9 Bolt Was Way Too Well-Trained

bolt

So the entire premise of Bolt was that the dog had grown up believing the show he was working on was real, and he actually had superpowers and went on action-packed adventures with his little mistress Penny.

Just how was the show able to maintain the illusion for Bolt's sake? He would have to be impossibly well-trained to always follow the commands of Penny and not accidentally do something that revealed the show's fake world. And what about retakes for the other actors in the scene with Bolt? Multiple re-takes never gave him a clue?

8 The Huntsman Was No Freind To Snow White

snow white

The whole story of Snow White gets kickstarted when the jealous queen orders her huntsman to take Snow White to the forest and end her life. The Huntsman cares for Snow and lets her go instead, against direct orders from his queen.

But if the Huntsman acted out of a desire to protect Snow White, he did a bad job of it. His big idea was to let a fourteen-year-old who had led an incredibly sheltered life loose alone in the forest. It's a miracle something horrible didn't happen to Snow.

7 Why Is A Raven Like A Writing Desk?

mad hatter

This is one of the most famous questions in literature, asked by the Mad Hatter to Alice in her titular novel. Many people assume the question is deliberately silly and nonsensical, in keeping with the Hatter's personality. But the author of the Alice In Wonderland novels, Lewis Carroll himself provided an answer to the question:

"Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!"

Keep in mind Carrol spelled Never as Nevar. And the inverted Nevar becomes... Raven.

6 Why Didn't Ariel Use Her Writing Ability More?

Kids these days. Always on their mobiles, texting to their friends about every little thing. There is at least one Disney teenager who should have inculcated this habit into her life, and that's Ariel.

After being granted a pair of legs, Ariel sets out to make Prince Eric fall in love with her. Only she can't communicate directly since she has lost her voice. It's the biggest obstacle to their happily ever after, and it could have been entirely avoided if Ariel had simply remembered to bring along a pen and paper.

5 Was Belle A Bodybuilder?

via pinterest.com

One of the most tender moments in Beauty and the Beast occurs after the Beast fends off a wolf attack in the forest, and then collapses onto the ground soon afterward in a faint. It is up to Belle to hoist the unconscious Beast onto the back of the horse Philippe and take him to the castle.

It's a sweet little scene, but the emotion is undercut by the fact that it is clearly impossible for Belle to get the Beast onto Philippe's back on her own. Or had she been secretly hitting the gym?

4 Jafar Should Have Used His Staff More

via pinterest.com

Jafar may have been after Alladin's lamp, but he had plenty of magical power even without the Genie. The staff that he was seen carrying at all times had the power to hypnotize other people. We see Jafar use it on the Sultan many times and he even manages to control Jasmine with it.

So why did he not use the device more often? He could have controlled Alladin and made him willingly give up the lamp. The third act of the movie could have been resolved much quicker and in Jafar's favor.
