Lately, the magical company that is Disney has been recreating a lot of its beloved animated films via live-action. In the past five to ten years, we’ve seen many of our favorite Disney characters brought to life by well-known actors like Emma Watson, Angelina Jolie, and Cate Blanchett. And with other titles on the horizon like The Lion King, Mulan, and Dumbo, and many more on the way, there’s a great variety of possibilities that casting directors may take with each movie.

But of course, Disney fans themselves have taken the liberty of creating fan castings. People pick an actor or actress that they believe could portray the character well, match their picture alongside one of the animated character, then take to Tumblr, Pinterest, or Reddit to discuss their thoughts on why their casting idea is perfect.

Now I’ll admit, I was very impressed by some of the collages I saw regarding fan castings. There are some true fans who do a lot of research into the actors they pick and get very in-depth on why they think said person would portray the character well. And yet, there are plenty of others that I also find myself looking at and wondering, “Who really thought this was a good idea?”

This is obviously my opinion, as I’m sure there are some items on this list that you’ll both agree and disagree with me on. Either way, I hope you’ll give each concept enough thought before leaning one way or the other.

20 No Thanks: A Tiny Mermaid

via: youtube.com

I’ll just go ahead and say it: I’m not the biggest fan of Ariana Grande. Sure, I get that she basically found her claim to fame through Disney, but I just don’t really see her in any type of role as a Disney princess.

It's clear that whoever portrays Ariel needs to be able to sing very well since Ariel’s voice is an important part of the film’s plot.

However, aren’t there better options for Ariel other than Ariana Grande? While she's done some acting, this role may require an actress with a few more more major roles under her belt. I mean, didn’t anyone else think it was rather odd for her to be in anything related to the Final Fantasy franchise? Or was that just me?

19 Yes Please: An Empire To Be Found

Yay! I get to talk about a movie that I feel is so underrated in the Disney community. Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a fantastic film with amazingly unique characters and a thrilling plot. The male protagonist is a nerdy historian who loves legends, while the female lead is the princess of Atlantis.

What more could any Disney fan possibly ask for?

Personally, I think Grant Gustin as Milo Thatch and Zoe Kravitz as Princess Kida are both perfect fits. I can see them both living up to the roles easily. Some of you might think that putting a geekier guy into Milo’s role would be better, but personally, I think this is an interesting choice. I can definitely see Grant nailing Milo’s personality very well.

18 No Thanks: Hotline Crustacean

via fancasts.tumblr.com

So the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this fan casting was Sebastian singing “Hotline Bling”. Even though Drake is a talented performer, I just cannot see him portraying this strict and uptight crab at all. Sebastian from The Little Mermaid is one of those characters who basically exists as a father figure to Ariel. He cares about her safety, and he can be pretty strict.

To me, Drake comes off as a laid back guy with not a care in the world.

Sure, he’d be able to do the singing for the character with no issue. And I do understand that acting means that the person will more than likely not be themselves. It just seems weird to me, so we'll stick to a no.

17 Yes Please: Waltz To The Bells

If you think this is a bad idea, hear me out! I want you to take a good look at Christoph Waltz’s face. You have to admit that it’s very similar to Frollo’s from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I could really see him fitting the character well, especially since he’s a very good actor.

However, I am unsure about whether or not Christoph Waltz can sing.

To me, that’s an important question because of Frollo’s main song in the film, which is both powerful and creepy, so it would take someone with a lot of vocal strength to convey all the weirdness that’s in that piece. Someone needs to address this issue so we can be sure of Christoph Waltz nailing this role!

This will come as no surprise to anybody, but I haven’t seen any type of fan casting that would be perfect for Pocahontas. We all know that Pocahontas is Native American, and that’s to large a part of the film to be neglected. To some people, Glee actress Naya Rivera might look like she could pull off the role.

However, Naya Rivera is of Puerto Rican, African-American, and German descent.

I feel like this discussion should be very similar to the one regarding the upcoming live-action Mulan film. They should cast for accuracy, not popularity! Rivera would be an okay choice, but she’s not ideal for the role. Sure she can sing, but I’d much prefer somebody who’s actually Native American.

15 Yes Please: Swing Those Vines Our Way

I haven’t watched Game of Thrones, and I don’t intend to anytime soon. However, I know enough about Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo to understand just how perfect this casting would be for Tarzan. Firstly, Emilia Clarke is actually English, so she would be a great person to portray Jane Porter.

And as for Jason Momoa, well, he’s had his fair share of shirtless roles. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind taking on another as Tarzan. That, and we’re already aware of the chemistry Emilia and Jason can pull off. I would love to see the two of them in these roles. Disney, please give me a live-action version with these two as Jane and Tarzan.

Thanks!

14 No Thanks: Best To Keep Ringing Bells

via hollywood.com

Now I get why Quasimodo would be a difficult character to cast for. It isn't every day you see someone that looks like that character. But at the same time, I really wonder who looked at Shia LaBeouf and said, “You know, he’d be perfect as Quasimodo.” I honestly can’t see that!

Now I’m picturing Quasimodo in a “Just do it!” pose and I’m not happy.

I just can’t see LaBeouf in the role. Recently, he’s been in far too much trouble doing stupid things. Again, I know acting is acting. But I’m just not a fan of somebody so weird and brash performing in a shy and quiet role like this. Besides, I don’t think he’d have the patience to sit through that lengthy make-up process of making himself look like the character.

13 Yes Please: A New Coat

Now some of you might not be fans of this Cruella de Vil casting, but I personally think this would be fantastic. If you’re a nerd, but aren’t familiar with Julianne Moore, I hope you’ve watched The Hunger Games movies. Her performance as President Alma Coin was both incredible and amazing to watch, which is why I think she’d be great as Cruella de Vil.

I could definitely see her pulling off her main outfit well. It’s just a matter of whether or not she could get down the laugh, which is a very essential part of Cruella’s character. Honestly, after seeing this picture, I couldn’t really think of anyone else who could fit the role. Although I’ll admit, Glenn Close was pretty fantastic.

12 No Thanks: A Ticking Hook

via: pinterest.com

Why exactly would Russell Brand be great for this role? From what I know of his work, he’s mainly a comedian. Sure, Captain Hook might not be the most interesting villain out there, but he’s far from the most comedic.

I just don't really see Brand handling the role very well, as an actor.

If anything, I thought of Benedict Cumberbatch when I first thought of a fan casting for the Peter Pan villain. We think Annie Leibovitz's Disney recasting photoshoot chose Russell Brand because he looks a bit like Captain Hook. However, looks aren’t all that matters in these situations. I definitely prefer castings that feel believable based on the actor’s personality.

11 Yes Please: Princess Emma

via hollywood.com

I feel like Emma Stone would be an incredible actress to portray Anna from Frozen. First off, there would be barely any hair work that would need done other, than the white streak in Anna’s hair. You are more than welcome to disagree with me, but I think Emma is basically canon Anna.

Emma Stone is goofy, funny and she’s absolutely adorable.

I don’t think there’s a better pick for Anna out there. I can see her pulling off everything so well, especially her personality and cute dresses. At the same time, I really can’t think of a good fit to play her older sister off the top of my head. Maybe Amanda Seyfried? Or maybe a really cool fan casting of Scarlett Johansson as Elsa!

10 No Thanks: Too Many Tentacles!

Don’t get me wrong! I admire Melissa McCarthy and I think she’s an incredible person to look up to. However, I can’t really see her as Ursula the sea-witch. For some reason, I always imagined Ursula being played by an older, African-American woman. The first person to pop into my head was Mo’Nique, even though there is a version with Queen Latifah in Annie Leibovitz's Disney session.

Now, I wouldn’t have anything against Disney if they were to cast Melissa McCarthy in this role. But now this just makes me curious as to whether or not she can sing. Though out of everything, I can see McCarthy being really good at Ursula’s evil cackle. I feel like that would be the stuff of cinematic magic, and I’d be okay with that.

9 Yes Please: A Herculean Trio

A live-action version of Disney’s Hercules is something I’ve wanted to see happen for a while now. But as projects come and go, I really fear that we’ll never see this happen. Although, this is Disney we’re talking about, so any type of magic is possible. But look at this fan casting. All three of these casting options are perfect.

Chris Pratt would be incredible as Hercules, because of his fun and wild personality.

And out of all the fan castings I’ve seen for Megara, Gal Gadot struck me as the best, since for some reason, I can see her being able to pull off Meg’s sass. And personally, I feel like Jude Law is great in any role he’s in. Just don’t make Hades British.

8 No Thanks: Let's Not Get Tangled Up

I used to be a huge Taylor Swift fan when I was young, and in middle school. Now here I am, regretting some bad choices in my life. Sure, Swift can sing, which is important to her character. This is true for any Disney character and heroine.

But I just can’t see Taylor Swift as the klutzy and adorable Rapunzel.

If anything, we should have Mandy Moore play the character in a live-action film, since she is Rapunzel’s voice actress. I’m not saying Taylor Swift doesn’t deserve the role! However, I just see a lot of actresses who could easily portray Rapunzel and get her personality down on the first go.

And yet, I’ll admit, Taylor Swift looks beautiful as Rapunzel.

7 Yes Please: An Incredible Family

This is an adorable example, since Mariska Hargitay and her husband Peter Hermann have a perfect little family and have even acted together before. This really helps, because I can see them both being perfect together as Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl. Hermann also did comedy work on 30 Rock when he's not joining his wife on Law & Order.

Elastigirl is very much a strict mother and wants what’s best for her kids, so it makes sense that Mariska Hargitay is such a wholesome and dependable presence on Law & Order . I can see her fitting into the role well and also being able to pull off chemistry with her husband.

Now for the real question: how does one make The Incredibles a live action film?

6 No Thanks: Colors Of The Wind

via doctordisney.com

Look at this! The pose is perfect. The environment is wonderful. There’s even a deer. Oh, and is that John Smith’s boat? And look at that Pocahontas. Oh, wait. It’s Jessica Biel from Annie Leibovitz's collection. Cool, I guess?

Sarcasm aside, I don’t understand why I can’t find any decent fan castings for Pocahontas.

You would think that we live in a day and age where these castings wouldn’t be too difficult. Slowly but surely, all of the world is becoming accustomed to diversity. So why then is it so strenuous for them to find anyone to accurately portray Pocahontas not as a white woman, but as Native American? I really do hope this stops at some point, because this is getting ridiculous.

5 Yes Please: Stately Lady

via: twitter.com

I’m sure you’re all aware that Meryl Streep rocks in literally every single role she’s given. And yes, I’m fully aware that a live-action Cinderella has already been done. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful movie, and Cate Blanchett is great as Lady Tremaine.

However, I think it would also be spectacular to see Streep in the mean stepmother’s shoes.

I say this because of her performance in Into the Woods. Have you seen her in that? She’s incredible, and I know it’s far from her best role. I just think that she can really fit any villain’s shoes and pull the character off just the way they need to be. However, if they do another live-action Cinderella, they’d have to give the stepmother a song. Because it’s Meryl Streep.

4 No Thanks: Let Her Sleep

via doctordisney.com

Okay, so the picture itself is pretty, I’ll give it that. But that’s the only positive aspect I see from this shot. First off, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens are no longer dating. This makes me curious as to whether or not this was taken when they were still in a relationship. Second, Vanessa is wide awake, and Zac looks like he’s the one that’s asleep.

Shouldn’t it be the other way around? It makes me question the whole setting of this Sleeping Beauty-inspired Annie Leibovitz shot.

And I know this is probably just me being nit-picky, but isn’t Aurora supposed to be blonde? I understand that these pictures were taken just for a random and fun photoshoot, but wasn’t a blonde wig available? Or maybe Ashley Tisdale?

3 Yes Please: No Frog In Our Throats

In this May 29, 2013 photo released by DisneyParks.com on Aug. 22, 2013, actress-singer Jennifer Hudson, dressed as the character Tiana from the animated film "The Princess and the Frog," in Patterson, N.Y., as part of the Disney Dream Portrait series. I fully agree that Anika Noni Rose, Tiana’s voice actress, would be a great fit to play the character in a live action The Princess and The Frog film. However, Jennifer Hudson would also be an excellent fit for the creative, headstrong Tiana.

Jennifer Hudson looks gorgeous in Tiana’s bridal dress, and we love that they made a life-size version of it.

We all know that Hudson’s voice is gorgeous. Again, I would love for Tiana’s voice actor to play her. But Hudson is also fit for the role. Her voice is stellar, and I know it would be put to good use with some of the songs in the film’s soundtrack. The next question is: how well would Hudson’s voice look, matched up to that of a frog?

2 No Thanks: A Whole Nope World

via doctordisney.com

This is one I’m going to be extremely picky about, because Aladdin is my favorite Disney film. I am beyond excited for the upcoming live action film, and I think they did a great job with the casting.

However, if this fan casting had come true, I know that I wouldn’t be the only one unhappy with this.

First off, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony aren’t even in a relationship anymore, so there’s that. Second, I just can’t see either one of them as Aladdin and Jasmine, I really can’t! And to me, there’s nothing really magical about this picture other than the fact they’re on a flying carpet. This is another Leibovitz pairing, so the photo itself is amazing, despite the odd couple.

You’re on a magic carpet, guys! Smile!

1 Yes Please: Red And Weisz Apples

via doctordisney.com

Now I know some might look at this and think, “Shouldn’t someone younger be playing Snow White?” And you know, you’re not wrong. If I remember correctly, Snow White is 16 in the main story. Rachel Weisz is almost 50, surprisingly. However, I really think that she’s a beautiful Snow White in this Leibovitz shot.

We cannot allow the Hollywoodian tendencies to sideline female actresses as they get older.

The next question I do have, though, is whether or not those animals around her are real. Probably not, but hey, let me dream about Disney magic. It also looks like the Snow White dress is made out of some really comfortable and velvety material, which might not necessarily be accurate for the time period, but it looks really nice for the photoshoot.
