Disney versus DreamWorks is a tale as old as time. Well, actually it’s only a story that’s been around for about two decades, which isn’t nearly as long as Disney has been in production. Still, it’s been a massive rivalry ever since DreamWorks put out their first animated movie, Antz, and it’s only gotten more heated since. Well, actually I’m not so sure Disney and DreamWorks are really at each other's throats anymore. I mean sure you could point to some obvious comparisons, like the twenty-five below, but in a business like Hollywood, there’s bound to be copycats. That’s just how the media roles. If something is successful you bet someone else is going to take that idea and run with it. The copies may even improve on the original’s ideas

You’re also a big part of it and you sort of vote with your dollars. Frozen wouldn’t have exploded as much as it did if people didn’t see it in the theater and or pay for merchandise. What I’m saying is a lot of this supposed rivalry is manufactured by you, the customer, or I guess in this case the fan. We all are of something, but there’s that minority of the fanbase that can’t stand anyone else being happy on the other side of the fence. I previously discussed this dilemma in my Marvel vs. DC memes piece. At the end of the day admittedly I like Disney more, but DreamWorks has its place too. Peaceful thoughts aside let’s tear them both down for the sake of comedy.

25 Lovable Lugs

via imgflip

I’m a Disney fan myself, but it’s not like I despise DreamWorks. There’s plenty of good stuff in their catalog and at certain points of my life I’ve enjoyed them all. Take Shrek for example. It was a pop cuter phenomenon and it hit at just the right time for me. It was, in itself, a parody of Disney and fairy tales the likes of which hadn’t been done before despite the fact that the story of a beloved monster with a heart of gold is fairly common in storytelling. So much so that one could argue Wreck-It Ralph is just a clone of Shrek, but through a video game lens. That’s a pretty darn harsh critique, but this meme does have some merit behind it.

24 Trolling Trolls

via imgflip

Forgive me if I’m forgetting a Disney classic, but to my knowledge, I don’t think they have ever portrayed good trolls in a movie before Frozen. They’re not exactly the cutest interpretation either, but then again compared to more monstrous, evil ones. Still when you compare them to DreamWorks’ trolls in Trolls, well, they look like scum. They’re actually kind of mischievous in Frozen as in they’re trying to break up a relationship. For the right reasons sure, but they’re still doing wrong. I just don’t trust them. Everyone in Trolls is adorable and just trying to have a good time. Who wouldn’t fall in love with troll versions of Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick? For a kids movie, the music is pretty catchy too all thanks to my man JT.

23 Beauty And The Shrek

Via imgflip

Let’s dial things back a bit to my first entry and to my introduction. Before I poked fun at Wreck-It Ralph for the titular character being similar to Shrek. He shouldn’t be on such a high horse about that though because before Shrek there was Beauty and the Beast. Those two movies are actually more similar than the Wreck-It Ralph meme anyway. Shrek is a parody of all Disney movies, but by and large it is a story of a disgusting monster falling in love with a beautiful woman aka Beauty and the Beast. There’s a twist to it yes so it’s not a complete rip-off, but the Beast is right to get a bit perturbed. In terms of who does it better? I think that choice is obvious.

22 Flushed Dreams

via imgflip

Flushed Away seems like eons ago in 2006, my graduating year. I remember watching it, but not much about the plot. Basically, a fancy pet rat accidentally is flushed down the toilet and he has to survive. It’s sort of like a fish out of water story, or in this case a rat in the water story. Badum tss! Anyway, he has to get acquainted with common life, as in: eat stuff he’s never even dreamed of before like a nice spoonful of slugs. Now Ratatouille is about a rat that knows how to cook fancy dishes, which works for the line in this meme. Of course Roddy, that’s the rat, would want to star in that film instead even through it wouldn’t’ even be out for another year. Can he see into the future?

21 Obvious Plagiarism

Via me.me

At their very co, e both of these movies are actually very different in terms of plot. Finding Nemo is, well, about finding a lost son named Nemo across the wide chasms of the sea. Shark Tale is about a fish trying to pay back his debts when he stumbles onto a crime family of great white sharks and their black sheep of a son who befriends him. Obviously by the name itself you can gather Shark Tale has more of a centered plot on Sharks whereas the sharks in Finding Nemo are a very brief plot point. The crazy thing here is both shark stories feature vegetarian sharks trying to make right. So while the overall plots are different this tiny detail in Sharks Tale is a bit suspicious.

20 Catch Of The Day

Via imgflip

I went back to the beginning on Shrek and now I’m doing the same thing with another theme: the fish out of water story. Now The Little Mermaid is in itself a literal fish out of water story where a mermaid, Ariel, is trying to get accustomed to the surface world. Home is a fairly recent DreamWorks movie about a group of aliens trying to invade Earth with one of them falling out of order and in turn learning the ways of what it is to be a human on Earth. It’s kind of a cute movie and one with a good message. Compared to Ariel though, ha, the alien, Oh, doesn’t have a prayer. Hmm, that being said I’m going to Google Oh just out of curiosity and… Ugh, it’s just as I thought.

19 Secret Penguin Man

Via imgflip

Madagascar is right up there with Shrek in terms of DreamWorks franchises I couldn’t give a rat’s behind about. That said there’s no denying the comedy of that beloved rogue penguin brigade. I mean everyone says James Bond wears a penguin suit as in a tuxedo so it goes to reason that real penguins might be secret agents too, or at least these ones think they are. Anyway their spinoff, Penguins of Madagascar, is actually pretty good. Compared to G-Force it’s comedy gold. It’s so bad and it feels like they wanted to make a DreamWorks movie based on crude, pop-infused humor, but completely missed the mark on even that level. Secret agents they are not. Leave that work to the penguins my guinea pig friends.

18 Dragon Wars

Via imgflip

The best thing to have come out of DreamWorks was to be How to Train Your Dragon. It’s astoundingly good in that it tells an excellent story, is genuinely charming and heartfelt all without having to resort to crass humor. Plus it’s about Vikings taming dragons to become their lifelong pets. What doesn’t sound cool about that scenario? In all my research I found Disney tends to vilify dragons with a few exceptions. One of their oldest is of course Pete’s Dragon from 1977, which was a melding of live action and animation. It’s not very good, nor is it’s newer 2016 counterpart. Taste aside there’s one thing this meme gets right. Toothless, from How to Train Your Dragon, could destroy Elliot from Pete’s Dragon.

17 We’re Racing Snails Now?

Via imgflip

This one just blows my mind on so many levels. First of all I’m going to be defending Cars, a movie that isn’t as bad as I thought, but still pretty mediocre in terms of Pixar films. It’s hard not to defend though compared to Turbo. I mean I get it. I can practically see the boardroom meeting. Those Cars movie are making Disney millions. We need a racing franchise too. Quick think of something that can race, but isn’t exactly known for racing. Oh right let’s go with a snail. Get it? Snails are normally slow so… I mean you can see where I’m going with that fictional meeting. Sure, financially it did do well, but I guess not enough to make a sequel.

16 Big Boss Baby

Via imgflip

Ugh, every time I see a piece of The Boss Baby merchandise I just want to puke. It’s another one of those pitch meetings I can see someone suggesting super intelligent babies as the stars. In the 80s and 90s that was actually a genre unto itself for a time like with Look Who’s Talking Now and Rugrats. People adore babies and DreamWorks wasn’t wrong. The Boss Baby raked in a metric ton of cash, but there’s no real accounting for taste when it comes to children picking out a movie and I was the same way too, but I’ve since woke up. Jack Jack, from The Incredibles, is more of a boss baby than Alec Baldwin could ever hope to be. Sure Theodore can talk, but Jack Jack has super powers!

15 A Dreamy Rooster

Via imgflip

Roosters haven’t really stared in prominent roles in Disney movies at least not to the extent of DreamWorks’ Chicken Run. Rocky Rhodes, played by Mel Gibson, who at the time wasn’t a crazy lunatic, is a hunk of a rooster. He’s a stunt rooster that promises to break the female chickens out of captivity. It’s basically a parody of The Great Escape. What does Disney have in terms of roosters? An incredibly annoying one from Moana, Hei Hei, that is only there for merchandising purposes. Don’t believe me? Go to your local Target and or Wal-Mart and look at the Moana stuff. He’s everywhere and most of the stuff makes a horrific noise as if they were manufactured to annoy the heck out of parents. Compared to Rocky Hei Hei is a chump.

14 Disney’s Low Point

Via imgflip

Does anybody remember Disney’s The Wild? I recall seeing previews for it back in 2006, but to my recollection I had no idea it was a Disney movie. For one, the animation looked terrible. I thought it was a rip-off of DreamWorks’ Madagascar series from some other animation company, but I was wrong. Unlike the earlier compassion between Finding Nemo and Shark Tale, these two plots are actually pretty identical. Both start in the Central Park Zoo and are about animals wanting to escape back to the wilds. The only real switch here is that Disney seemingly plagiarized DreamWorks this time. Madagascar isn’t a great movie either, but it’s hard not to side with them as they came out a year before The Wild did.

13 Put That Shrek Back Where It Came From

Via iFunny

I’m not really sure what this meme is actually trying to say in that there’s no way of telling if it’s pro Disney, or pro DreamWorks. We’re almost at the halfway point of this article so we may as well just call this one a draw. Monsters Inc and Shrek really have nothing in common with each other. I guess technically the monsters of Monsters Inc learn that they didn’t have to be scary in order to be liked and Shrek sort of learns the same lesson, but with a princess and a kingdom plot line thrown in there too. To me the real funny thing about this piece is imaging both characters with reversed roles. I just like the name of Shrek Wazowski and or Mikeck.

12 Horsing Around

Via imgflip

When people think of DreamWorks they probably think of Shrek and that association isn’t wrong. It just might be hard to believe that Shrek was actually their fifth animated film. So yeah, it took them awhile before they really produced a hit that could stand toe to toe with some of Disney’s colossal giants. Now the point of this meme brings up the flop that came right after Shrek, which was Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. It’s boring to say the least, but I do admire them for going back to classical animation. Thing is no one is likable in that movie. Disney has a lot of great horses to choose from, but Maximus from Tangled is probably their best. I mean just look at him. He can wield a sword!

11 Big Wood

Via imgflip

Need I say more? I think that meme says it all. Anyway Disney’s Pinocchio is a classic movie that has a lot going for it in terms of being iconic to the company. Jiminy Cricket has sort of gone on and become something more than the movie itself. It’s cute, but not exactly entertaining to kids nowadays in that there’s not really a lot of jokes. Pinocchio from Shrek on the other hand, while annoying, is actually pretty hilarious. Even his voice, while shrill and irritating, was made that way on purpose to make him more unique. He’s basically the more crass version of Disney’s puppet. That said I bet he could please ladies more if you know what I mean. Just to be clear, Shrek’s Pinocchio wins.

10 Size Does Matter

Via imgflip

It may be harsh to bring this up again, but Toothless is an amazing dragon. To show how amazing he is let’s look at another dragon from the Disney universe: Mushu. He may be funny, but he’s a pretty frail thing. I know I know. The point of Mulan is showcasing that even in small packages great things can come from them. I realize that’s a great message it’s just, you know, he is kind of pathetic compared to Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. Again, I realize that isn’t fair, but hey I didn’t make the meme. I’m only writing about it. The one thing Toothless is missing is a little cricket buddy. Oh and I guess Eddie Murphy although maybe that’s a blessing.

9 Super Clones

Via Kuroi-91 DeviantArt

It took awhile, but DreamWorks finally made a bootleg of The Incredible with Megamind. It only took them six years from The Incredibles’ launch in 2004 to Megamind’s in 2010. Timelines aside I actually liked Megamind. Not more than The Incredibles mind you, but still as a DreamWorks movie it was pretty decent. That said it does come off as a little “me too” in a way. It’s a superhero movie, but from the point of view of the villain just like in Dr. Horrible Sing A Long Blog. Look. The point of this article is that ripping off each other is a way of life. All great art comes from something else. I’m not really calling Megamind a work of art, but you get the idea.

8 The Emperor’s New Burn

Via imgflip

During the late 90s and early 2000s Disney’s animation studio wasn’t producing hits. Pixar pretty much carried them through that era. So with their recent trend of flops I didn’t except much from The Emperor’s New Groove when I saw trailers. Now I think it’s one of the most under appreciated Disney movies of that era. It’s just pure comedy. Sure there’s a message in there too, but for the most part it’s just an animated comedy. The Road to El Dorado is an okay move about two explorers trying to find the lost city of gold, which you could say The Emperor's New Groove is about in that it’s about an emperor with a city of gold. He’s kind of a god in a way so that’s the joke.

7 Parting Ways

Via imgflip

Speaking of late 90s Disney films let’s talk about Mulan. It’s an okay movie with one fantastic song in it: I’ll Make a Man Out of You. For such a mediocre movie it’s still in my top ten Disney songs of all time. Anyway it’s about a woman going to war in place of her father to help the Chinese army fight off the Mongolian Empire. It’s a great piece of history, but you know what else is a great piece of history? Moses. Well I guess if you believe in The Bible that is. Fiction, or not this meme’s sentiment is great. By the way the Moses depicted in it is from The Prince of Egypt, another early DreamWorks movie before they really made it big.

6 Cagey

Via imgflip

Wow what an insult. Now I’m a giant, and I mean giant, Nicolas Cage fan even though I know his work isn’t exactly stellar. That’s what kind of makes him a national treasure, if you will. I even visited his future-resting place in New Orleans. That’s how psyched I am as a fan. Anyway Pixar is now in a similar slump to my previous comment about Disney’s falling out in the early 2000s. The tables have now turned and Disney's in house studio is producing more hits than Pixar. The Good Dinosaur is not a good movie and will likely be forgotten. While it and The Croods share little in terms of related plot lines, they both do feature cavemen and dinosaurs so that’s enough leeway for whoever created this meme to burn Pixar good.
