In this list, we’re going to weigh all Zodiac signs, their traits, strengths, and weaknesses, against D&D’s alignment system. It's a way that can help players put together a backstory and give them a frame of reference for role-play.

Update on March 27th, 2023, by Kristy Ambrose: Examining a character or a player's astrological sign can tell you something about their style of gameplay along with their role in the story. Some characters ultimately betray their friends as opposed to being the hero, and their actions might come as a surprise to some but not to others who always saw their destiny written in the stars. Another factor to consider is signs on the cusp, meaning those that are born on the day before or after the sun moves through a constellation. These can have the features of either or both signs, and there is some debate among modern astrologists as to what side is the dominant one, if any.

14 Aries: Chaotic Evil

  • March 21st - April 19th

A Character that is Chaotic Evil will always obey its own desires, and won’t think twice to hurt or use others if they gain something from it. Sometimes just because they feel like it. It’s an alignment of individualism with little regard for rules or others. A fire sign, ruled by Mars, can hardly behave in any other way but it can use its powers for good instead of evil.

Aries individuals are often creative, impatient, and brave, which are common traits of Chaotic Evil characters. They are also known for their egoistic and narcissistic behavior, as isn’t rare for them to tell others that they’re the best thing in the world, and what’s worse, they actually believe it.

13 Taurus: Lawful Evil

  • April 20th – May 21st

While lawful characters obey the law because it is the correct thing to do, Lawful Evil characters do so because it benefits them. They are the kind of people that will push laws that support their causes and ideals, without regard for consequences or the well-being of others.

Taurus people are very organized, patient, logical, and focused, traits that naturally mark them as morally lawful. Their respect for law and tradition might steam from the ancient origins of their sign, which dates from the Bronze Age. The thing is, they can be superficial, dominating, and headstrong, and when those traits are mixed with their organizational skills it makes them Lawful Evil.

12 Gemini: True Neutral

  • May 21st - June 21st

The True Neutral alignment is often said to be the most difficult to play. This is due to it being an alignment that is at the center of all others, which gives them the freedom to weigh in on others' opinions and values. True Neutral characters aren’t good or bad, they just are.

The history of this constellation goes back to the legend of Castor and Pollux, brothers and heroes from ancient Greek and Roman mythology. People who are Gemini are intelligent and versatile, which often leads them to become mediators between their friends. They also tend to be very analytical individuals, which sometimes makes them take their time to make hard choices.

11 Cancer: Chaotic Good

  • June 22nd - July 22nd

A character that is Chaotic Good will always be found doing what is right, regardless of norms or laws. They also don’t care about what others think of them, and they will often perform acts of altruism even if they end up looking like eccentrics. Like the constellation of the Crab, their hearts run ahead of their feet, and they take on an enemy much too big for them.

Cancers are caring and loving individuals, and due to their faithfulness and intuitive behavior, they often do good on behalf of others. They’re also unruly and prone to being emotionally driven, which often leads them into, well, chaotic situations.

  • July 23rd - August 23rd

Often known as the “goody-two-shoes alignment,” Lawful Good is an alignment that fits characters who abide by the laws or their own complex moral code. Lawful Good characters are always trying to do good and help others while doing their best to avoid breaking laws.

The constellation of the lion is connected with times of abundance. The banks of the Nile would flood when it was in the sky and the ancient Egyptians took notice. Leos are natural leaders who care about their loved ones, and they always go out of their way to make acts of kindness. One of their negative traits is that they are sometimes too arrogant to drop ideals or rules, even those that they instill in others.

9 Virgo: True Neutral

  • August 23rd - September 22nd

True Neutral characters are always in a state of calm and philosophical pondering. They also don’t take sides on things, and if they do, it wouldn’t be rare for them to change their loyalties if their freedom is compromised. The sign is symbolic of the goddess Astraea, the last deity to leave earth at the end of the Silver Age of Greek mythology.

Virgos are usually intelligent and curious, and due to their patience, they’re often found pursuing higher knowledge. Virgo people are also reliable and honest, but thanks to their overly analytical approach and fuzziness they often take their time to take hard stances.

  • September 22nd

A person born on September 22nd would be born on the cusp of Virgo and Libra, two signs that have common interests but clashing priorities. Somewhere between the placid Virgo and the selfish Libra, those born under this sign often fight to stay vigilant when it comes to opportunities but have the impulse control to keep out of trouble.

Since cold logic often guides them this can lead down an evil but disciplined path that metes out a certain kind of personal satisfaction. This is the kind of D&D character that would use a lot of damage-over-time spells or long-term curses.

7 Libra: Chaotic Neutral

  • September 22nd - October 23rd

Chaotic Neutral is the alignment of the unchained. People often associate it with madmen and anarchists due to their wild behavior and aversion to laws, but this alignment also suits people with hedonistic lifestyles or impulsive individuals. It's all about keeping the balance between the two, as the ancient symbol of the scales teaches us, and it's the only sign represented by an object instead of a person or animal.

This Alignment fits Libras due to their habit of following their whims, and because they protect their individual freedom. Libras are also known for being slow to make hard decisions, as they’d rather follow their heart than make a choice that’d hold them back later.

6 Scorpio: Neutral Evil

  • October 23rd - November 31st

Characters who are Neutral Evil are always looking out for themselves. They won’t hesitate to take any actions that will help them in their lives, as they care little for rules or the well-being of others.

While all these traits seem negative, Neutral Evil fits Scorpios as they’re often ambitious and focused individuals. They also tend to be secretive, cunning, and self-motivated, like the fierce insect that symbolizes their sign. People under the sign of Scorpio are said to be at times jealous and possessive, which are common things among Neutral Evil characters.

5 Sagittarius: Chaotic Good

  • November 22nd - December 21st

Any Chaotic Good character will do everything in its power to help others, even if that implies breaking the rules or making some harmless collateral damage. They will also protect other individuals’ freedom, and won’t care if they have to lie to keep someone safe.

Sagittarius is known to be a rather wild sign, which is a funy juxtaposition of the constellation's other and more domestic-sounding nickname, the Teapot. They do whatever they can to help those they care about, but sometimes their impatience and hotheadedness may lead them to break a rule or two to achieve their goals.

4 Capricorn: Lawful Neutral

  • December 22 – January 20

The sun moves through Capricornus at the end of the year, a constellation depicted as a half-goat half-fish creature, giving this sign its name. People often associate Lawful Neutral with boring Paladins or Wizards who only follow rules, but that’s just wrong. Lawful characters are able to twist the rules as much as they can without breaking them, as long as it benefits others.

People who are born under Capricorn are known for being very work-driven and loyal. They are responsible to the point of exhaustion and value team playing. The thing is, they are also very unforgiving and critical of those that aren’t up to their standards.

3 Aquarius: Neutral Good

  • January 20 – February 18

The history of this sign is a romantic one, referencing the beautiful Ganymede of Troy as the divine water carrier. Neutral Good is the alignment of those who respect freedoms and laws, but only if they aren’t oppressive or hurtful. Characters of this alignment are goodhearted, and they will always do their best to help others, even if it sometimes means breaking the law.

Aquarians are very open-minded and easygoing individuals who are prone to helping others. While they usually follow the rules, they won’t care if they have to break them for their personal gain or to help others, but only if they won’t hurt others in the process.

2 Pisces/Aquarius Cusp: Chaotic Neutral

  • February 18th

It's important to obey the law, but it's more of a guideline than a rule, and a person born on the cusp of these two mythical signs might have the power to bend the rules of thermodynamics. A class that uses their intuition and Charisma for their powers, like a Warlock or a Sorcerer, could be a Pisces/Aquarius cusp.

The downside of this kind of power is a character with a god complex, making them heedless of the consequences of their actions or indifferent to their effects, or essentially Chaotic Neutral. In the tradition of cusp signs, they could swing the other way and be hyper-aware of their actions on future events.

1 Pisces: Lawful Neutral

  • February 19th - March 20th

If Lawful Neutral had a motto, it’d be, “Obey the law, or else.” Also a fitting axiom for the final sign of the zodiac, and a negative and mutable one that aided Aphrodite when she was born from the sea. Lawful Neutral characters tend to be very attached to law and order, without caring if said rules are inherently evil or good. They will never lie or break a promise, as they don’t like to be seen breaking the rules.

Those who have Pisces as their sign is empathetic, emotional, and very selfless, and they fit the Lawful Neutral alignment because they always prioritize their ideals and rules over all else. It isn’t also rare for them to become very moody when people they idealize disappoint them.
