At San Diego Comic-Con this year, Maze Theory, Oculus, and BBC studios teamed up to showcase a demo of the upcoming virtual reality game Doctor Who: The Edge of Time. The sneak peek demonstrated part of the opening level of the feature-length game, including the voice work of current Doctor Jodie Whittaker.

The level opens with the Doctor’s voice coming over the radio, warning that the hydrorks, the new monster created for The Edge of Time, are only a few minutes away from breaking down the door behind you and catching you. She explains to you how to make a device to summon her ship, the iconic Tardis, to escape from the monsters. Using the multi-tool sonic screwdriver, you interact with the environment, manipulating objects to build the device. As you begin to summon the Tardis, an enemy flying saucer appears in the sky. The air is filled with the screeching voices of the Doctor’s oldest enemies, the Daleks. With another use of the sonic screwdriver, the Tardis appears and you step inside to realize that it is, as promised, bigger on the inside.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Time is scheduled to come out on several high-end VR systems this September. The game’s developer, Maze Theory, used a combination of 3D laser scanning and many, many photos to bring the Tardis interior that appears in the demo to life. Although the demo cuts to the immersive 360 degree title sequence before we get a good view of the Tardis, the interior is incredibly detailed, down to the custard cream biscuit dispenser.

While the world of the game is lovingly detailed, the gameplay so far seems relatively simple. The player interacts with the world using the sonic screwdriver, using it to open things, boost signals, and, yes, unscrew things. The Doctor guides you along over the radio, urging you to hurry if you are too slow.

Still, the demo only features the opening level. The puzzles will likely get more complex later in the game, and given how the Doctor’s radio cuts in and out when the Daleks fly overhead, you may not have a helpful alien guide for very long. Keep an eye on The Edge of Time, if only to see how Maze Theory brings the Doctor Who world to life in VR.
