Doki Doki Literature Club has quickly become one of the best visual novels to ever be released on PC, seeing you become the newest member of a school literature club alongside four cute schoolgirls all vying for your attention. Although at first you may be tricked into thinking this is nothing more than a fluffy, feel-good, slice-of-life about writing poetry and going on dates, many players have quickly realized that there's more to this cutesy dating sim than meets the eye.

As you progress the girls around you begin to behave oddly; starting to glitch and act erratically before vanishing from the game one by one. You later find out that these strange incidents are the actions of the fourth-wall-breaking and infatuated club president Monika, who quickly becomes so smitten with you (not your character, YOU) that she manages to break into the game's code, completely rewriting her and the other girl's scripts. But who is she?

For curious players and fans who wish to know more, here are some facts about the literature club's creepy, esteemed overseer that you may not have noticed on your first playthrough.

10 There's A Lot In A Name

The characters' name choices aren't random, and the choosing of Monika is no exception. Meaning "counselor" or "advisor", it reflects how her character was meant to be seen within the game as a person of kindness and guidance within the role of club president. But that's not all.

Although you wouldn't notice it at first, Monika was always meant to stand out from the other girls. Because of this, she's given the only western name, unlike Sayori, Yuki, and Natsuki who all had a strong Japanese influence. As she confides in you at the end of the game that she always felt different, it can be assumed that this unique name only would have added to her feeling more isolated and alienated from the other characters.

9 Made To Stand Out

Monika's unique name wasn't her only difference, as she was purposely designed to stand out to you from the very beginning of the game, you just might not have realized it at the time.

Stylistically, Monika is the only girl to have her hair tied back, be wearing black thigh-high socks instead of knee-length white, and have pink-tipped shoes instead of blue. Not only this but her sprite is always shown facing forwards towards the viewer instead of slightly to the side like her peers. As it is revealed that she has unique control over the game, it can be assumed that these differences were made to purposely try and catch the player's attention from the beginning.

8 She Controls The Game From The Store

When you go to download the game you'll notice that Monika is EXTREMELY present on the storefront, being the official image on Steam and also the author of the description, stating:

"Hi, Monika here!

I'm super excited for you to make friends with everyone and help the Literature Club become a more intimate place for all my members. But I can tell already that you're a sweetheart—will you promise to spend the most time with me? ♥"

In this way, it seems like Monika is trying to entice the player into buying the game, having already become infatuated, and goes a long way in preluding everything to come. Yikes.

7 She Knows You're Watching

Unless you've watched a stream of someone playing the game, you've probably never been privy to Monika's awareness of exactly what you're doing whilst playing.

The first to stream the game quickly found themselves at the mercy of her horrific jumpscare, deliberately inputted into the game when it detects that you may be streaming the content to other people online. She does seem to have some moral compass though, as despite being able to learn your name from your computer she will never choose to release it if you're streaming.

6 She Has More Reasons For Wanting You Than Her Infatuation

Although it may always seem that Monika only wants the player due to a deep-seated infatuation and obsession, there's definitely more to her longing than first meet the eye.

Monika tells you that when you're not playing she enters a 'sleep mode' which she equates to "being trapped in hell". Here her thoughts are filled with incoherent, jumbled patterns, static, rapidly flashing colors, and, most ominously, screaming. It's assumed this is what happens when you're on the computer but not playing the game, therefore using her memory for other things. But still, it's a pretty horrific thought.

5 A Sad Fate

As Monika has some sentience whilst the game is not being played, she has a lot more time to think than her peers. When having the large talk with her near the end of the game Monika heartbreakingly confides in you that she had had thoughts about deleting herself, not wanting to live inside the game anymore.

Monika tells you that had you not shown up to quell her loneliness and give her something to gain hope from, she definitely would have deleted herself by now, having attempted to escape the game before but being unsuccessful in doing so.

4 She Has An Active Twitter Account

One of the weirder facts about Monika is that she has an active real-life Twitter account which she uses to "share her thoughts and chat with the real world". At the end of the game, if you continue to spend time with her, Monika tells you her Twitter handle lilmonix3, which tells you she chose, despite some unknown person making the account for her.

On her Twitter, Monika shares photos of herself and the other girls in the Literature Club and asks her followers some pretty deep questions. It's this attention to detail with Monika's character that sees Team Salvato deemed to be one of the best visual novel developers around.

3 Green-Eyed Monster?

Monika's favorite color is emerald green which she believes she has a "connection" with due to it being her eye color in her character design, but could this choice have had a deeper meaning?

If during your playthrough you ignore her for another character, Monika's personality shifts from a supportive and kind leader to a jealous adversary, ready to delete and rewrite her friend's files all to have you to yourself. It could therefore be more likely that the use and significance of green in her design has more to do with the phrase "green with envy" than a simple color preference.

2 She's The Only Character With A Voice

Usually, visual novels don't use voice audio, but then Doki Doki Literature Club's not your average title.

When choosing to delete the game, Monika breaks the fourth wall for the last time to sing a song she wrote for you titled "Your Reality" which ends:

"What do you call love in your reality

And in your reality, if I don't know how to love you

I'll leave you be"

Although heartbreaking this also catches a lot of players by surprise, being a haunting reminder that she's talking to you sat at the computer and not the character in the game.

1 Her Birthday Has Significance

Giving characters' a birthday is usually nothing but a cool gimmick. However, Monika's birthday being September 22nd hits differently. Why? Because it also happens to be the date of Doki Doki Literature Club's release.

Given Monika's abilities outside the game and her knowledge that she's trapped inside it, her birthday coinciding with Doki Doki Literature Club's eventual release date is yet another sly hint about her significance within it. It is an incredibly clever twist for those who catch it.
