A recent Japanese poll asking anime fans which anime or manga should be adapted by Hollywood produced discouraging results—at least for Hollywood. The survey comes at a time when live-action adaptations are becoming increasingly popular, with everything from Disney animations to network cartoon series being rebooted.

Though gaining in popularity in more recent years, live-action adaptations, especially of anime, are not a new target for Hollywood. Anime such as Dragon Ball Z, Gintama, and Full-Metal Alchemist have all received their own adaptations. Netflix in particular has been spearheading the live-action anime movement, even recently beginning production on adaptations of Cowboy Bepop and Gundam that will be released on the platform in the foreseeable future. Whether or not Hollywood has been successful in adapting these popular anime is another matter. The films that have been produced thus far have reached varying degrees of success, though most have ended in disappointment for fans.

The survey, conducted in Japan and reported by Yahoo News! Japan, involved 1000 men and women ranging in age from teens to 60s. The poll asked fans to name which anime or manga they would like to see made into live-action Hollywood productions. The results revealed that fans are overwhelmingly against any adaptations, with the top answer reading “nothing” or “none.”

Kotaku summarized the rest of the top ten survey results, which demonstrate just how strong fans’ opinions were regarding live-action anime remakes:

  1. Nothing/None: 456 votes
  2. Demon Slayer: 60 votes
  3. Attack on Titan: 48 votes
  4. Jujutsu Kaisen: 34 votes
  5. Naruto: 24 votes
  6. Detective Conan: 18 votes
  7. Slam Dunk: 15 votes
  8. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: 15 votes
  9. My Hero Academia: 15 votes
  10. Hunter x Hunter: 14 votes

The number of votes for absolutely no live-action adaptations totaled far more than the next nine results combined. Even though Demon Slayer claimed the spot for the anime fans most wished to see adapted, it only received a measly 60 votes overall, and all others got less than 50. It would be difficult to send Hollywood a clearer message.

Interestingly, the survey also asked fans to state their reasons for casting a particular vote. The consensus was that anime should be as it is, and any attempt to make it into a live-action film would ruin exactly what makes it special. This is a sentiment that surely many other fandoms can understand, with many book-to-film adaptations being a prime example of how it feels to “ruin the magic.”

If Hollywood has any genuine interest in producing films that appeal to fans, perhaps they should take heed of the results of this survey.
