The scandal that rocked the Dead or Alive 6 community with a greedy monetization structure in place for changing a character’s hair color has been resolved, sort of. Koei Tecmo has walked back their plan to charge players every single time they wanted to change the color of a character’s hair and will be refunding all Premium Tickets used in this way. The catch however is that this solution is only for PlayStation 4 users, with PC and Xbox One users not even mentioned.

In all likelihood, the decision will also be applied to the other platforms so that everyone will be treated equally, but it is odd not to see that mentioned explicitly in the update notes for patch v 1.21a, scheduled for March 31. As a result, players are understandably frustrated by the choice of communication in this update.

Assuming the update is eventually applied to all platforms, players will now need to purchase their new color and will permanently unlock for all relevant styles.

The decision to charge players at all for hair color changes in a fighting game is fascinating from the perspective of a case study, because in virtually all other fighting games this is a level of customization that is so basic, few would imagine charging anything at all. Tekken 7, Street Fighter V, Mortal Kombat 11, and other games with much larger player bases than Dead or Alive 6 have sophisticated levels of customization, all of which are far friendlier on the wallet.

With that said, Dead or Alive 6 is one of the most expensive fighting games on the market today. The base game runs about $59.99, though it is often on sale for half that amount. The DLC however sports a massive catalogue with 422 items, and one could easily spend a couple thousand dollars in dressing up their fighters. Still, fans of the game seem content to spend an absurd amount of money customizing their characters.

As a result, while an external observer might look at the charging of hair customization as absolutely ridiculous in any other game, Dead or Alive 6 players have voted with their wallets for years, and by supporting such a game, seem to be getting what they deserve.

Now, if the change isn’t applied to the PC and Xbox One versions soon, we might be seeing a far angrier player base in the near future.
