Don't Starve is a challenging experience in which players must attempt to survive an unforgiving wilderness. Players must learn to live off the land, endure wolf attacks, and uncover the many mysteries of the world. Don't Starve has a unique style and atmosphere that hooks players in immediately.

This game is full of unique and exciting mobs. These creatures can be passive, hostile, or neutral towards the player. In a randomly generated world, there's no telling what variety of mobs the player will encounter. Some creatures are beneficial to the player, while others are terrifying to encounter. But either way, the mobs in Don't Starve bring the world to life.

10 Rabbits

Don't Starve: A rabbit and a trap - A player chasing a beardling

Rabbits are a classic staple of Don't Starve. They are cute little animals that reside in the Grassland, Forest, and Savanna biomes. Rabbits are an invaluable food source in the game's early stages before players become expert chefs. Unfortunately, rabbits are scared very quickly and will flee to their rabbit hole when approached. Players must attempt to block their escape route or craft a trap to capture them.

When a player's sanity goes down below 40 percent, rabbits transform into beardlings. These hairy, unsettling creatures act like ordinary rabbits but now drop monster meat, nightmare fuel, and beard hair. They're still cute, though... right?

9 Doydoys

Don't Starve: The three stages of a DoyDoy: Baby, Teen and Adult

The doydoys are Don't Starve's equivalent of the dodo. The species was introduced in the Don't Starve: Shipwrecked expansion. Unfortunately, there are only two doydoys in existence, and they spawn on separate islands. It is down to the player to reunite the two and save the species from the brink of extinction. The doydoys, once reunited, will start to repopulate very quickly.

When killed, a doydoy will drop feathers, which can be used to craft a feather-lite sail or a tropical fan. Be warned, though, that killing off one of the last two doydoys will instantly summon Krampus, who isn't pleased about the extinction of this adorable species.

8 Krampus

Don't Starve: Krampus roaring intimidatingly - Krampus escaping down a hole

Players that rely on hunting for food will eventually have to face the wrath of Krampus. When players kill innocent creatures, such as rabbits, the murderous act will raise the player's naughtiness level. If this level reaches a randomly determined number between 31 and 50, Krampus or even multiple Krampii will appear to wreak havoc, and they are pretty challenging to fight. Just like its folklore origins, this beast punishes players by stealing their precious loot.

There are plenty of creative ways to counteract Krampus. For example, summoning Krampus at night will often mean it will spawn asleep. Players can also set up decoy chests, surrounded by traps to tempt Krampus away from essential items. Overall, Krampus is a fun addition that keeps naughty players on their toes.

7 Treeguards

Don't Starve: A player standing next to a Treeguard - A Treeguard chasing a player

Chopping down too many trees has the possibility of awakening a treeguard. These walking trees are incredibly tough, with a lot of health and deadly attacks. It is best to avoid them and run away, especially the tall treeguards.

All hope isn't lost when one of these towering mobs spawn. Players have a chance of calming them down if they plant pine cones nearby. In addition, a non-aggressive treeguard can be beneficial to the player. They will attack other hostile mobs, so it can be a good idea to keep a treeguard nearby. Just make sure to avoid chopping down any more trees in their presence.

6 Tallbirds

Don't Starve: A Tallbird kneeling over an egg - A group of Tallbirds chasing a player

Tallbirds are always a surprise the first time a player encounters them. With their large eye and long legs, they are fascinating to observe. But, unfortunately, they are also incredibly protective of their eggs, chasing off players that get too close.

It is possible to have a tallbird as a friendly pet. After a stolen tallbird egg hatches, a smallbird will spawn. It is very demanding, requiring 20 hunger points per day. The smallbird will stay by the player's side and defend them from foes. Unfortunately, once fully grown, a tallbird will become hostile to the player. It is quite a hurtful betrayal for any adoptive parent to experience.

5 Pigs

Don't Starve: A player standing before two pigs wearing hats - The Pig King surrounded by gold

The pigs are generally quite friendly creatures (unless the player is Webber, who the pigs will attack on sight) that live peacefully in their cozy huts. Pigs can even wear various headgear, making them look rather dashing at times (for a pig). A great benefit of having pigs around is that they will increase the player's sanity. So, it is helpful to bribe them with meat to get them to stick around.

There are many variations of pigs to encounter. Players can stumble upon the hostile guardian pigs, the terrifying werepigs, and even the pig king. Providing offerings to the king, such as food, will grant the player gold nuggets in return.

4 Catcoons

Don't Starve: A player near two Catcoons - A Catcoon pouncing on a bird

The catcoon is a mixture of a cat and a raccoon. Catcoons are cute but mischievous creatures that were introduced in the Reign Of Giants expansion. Alongside pouncing on other animals, such as birds, catcoons will steal any trinkets they spot on the ground. So it's important not to leave anything lying around when a catcoon is nearby.

Catcoons are initially neutral to the player and will not bother them too much. However, these creatures can be befriended if they are gifted toys or food and will follow the player around for a short time. The catcoon will also return the favor, spitting up their own gifts to the player like it was a hairball. If a catcoon is friendly to a player, these gifts can be more practical, such as various seeds or even gold.

3 Shadow Creatures

Don't Starve: A shadow creature - Two Night Hands approaching the campfire

Although the game is full of whimsy, Don't Starve is still an unsettling experience at times. When a player's sanity drops too low, the shadow creatures will begin to appear. They come in various forms, such as the Crawling Horror and the Terrorbeak. However, the creepiest version of the shadow creatures has to be the Night Hand. This looming hand will sneak up towards the player's campfire in an attempt to put it out. It even comes with its own creepy theme tune.

These creatures can become a real threat if the player isn't careful, especially when exploring the ruins during the Nightmare Cycle. When a player's sanity is too low, they become more real and will begin to attack. Unfortunately, they can only be seen by the player, so their allies cannot help them fight back. These mobs are terrifying and establish the tone of Don't Starve perfectly.

2 Beefalo

Don't Starve: A herd of Beefalo

The beefalo are incredibly useful mobs that are found in the Savanna biome. They are initially neutral to players (unless in heat, when it is imperative to stay well away from them) and do not mind when the player goes around scooping up their poop. A beefalo's manure is a vital resource for farming, allowing the fertilization of farms, bushes, and grass tufts.

Beefalo are often found in large herds and will all attack if one beefalo is injured. Therefore, they can be quite a protective force for players to be near when more dangerous mobs attack. Beefalo can also be domesticated with enough time and patience. With regular feeding of grass tufts and vegetables, a beefalo can even be ridden around by the player, which is a fantastic way to navigate the wilderness.

1 Chester

Don't Starve: Chester - Chester being used for inventory storage

While out exploring the wilderness, players have the chance of finding the eyebone. Once this bone is picked up, Chester will appear and hurry over to the player. Chester is an adorable, slobbery monster that also acts as a handy portable storage unit. Chester can even be transformed under a full moon if certain magical items are in his inventory. For example, nightmare fuel will turn him into Shadow Chester, who has three more inventory slots.

Players can put whatever they like in Chester. He isn't fussy, although lighting an item within Chester's inventory will cause him to rush around in panic, setting nearby trees and objects aflame. But, as long as the player has the eyebone in their possession, Chester will remain their helpful ally, making the unsettling world of Don't Starve a little less lonely.
