Bethesda shadow dropped the classic Doom titles on modern consoles back in July to a fairly negative response. While everyone agrees that id Software's legendary FPS titles hold up well, someone over at Bethesda had the bright idea of including DRM in these re-releases. A game made well before internet connectivity was an expected feature now required an internet connection to boot up.
It was eventually removed, but there was one silver lining from that release. Doom 3 didn't include any kind of DRM in its package. It came with an excellent port from developer Panic Button and brought the game to life beautifully on Nintendo Switch. Now, Bethesda seems to have gotten that same bright idea to include DRM for Doom 3.
In a brand new patch, Doom 3 has finally received Doom Slayer's Club integration. The main reason for this is to unlock a special Red Marine skin for Doom Eternal when it releases next year, but it's so odd how Bethesda felt the need to add this to Doom 3. Fans were perfectly content with the ports that are available, but Bethesda couldn't leave well enough alone.
Available now on all platforms (PS4, Xbox One, and Switch), the patch notes are as follows:
We're deploying a minor patch for DOOM 3 re-releases for all platforms today. This update has added the Slayers Club sign in option. By signing into your Slayers Club account through DOOM 3, you'll receive the Red DOOM Marine skin and DOOM 3 nameplate for DOOM Eternal when the game launches!
Doom 3 isn't necessarily the best game in the series, but it does do a lot of things right. The intro is a bit slow, but after the mid-point, the game flies through its ending with reckless abandon. The journey to hell is legitimately awesome and the game almost returns to classic Doom's action routes by the time the credits roll.
It's probably not worth booting up Doom 3 again just to get a classic skin in Eternal, but there are worse reasons to return to a game. Just make sure to avoid the expansions, since those definitely don't capture the magic of the main campaign.
