Doom Eternal’s next-gen update is now available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Enhancements and overall performance vary across the three platforms, although both PS5 and Series X will finally let you rip and tear with ray tracing enabled.

Today’s update for Doom gives you three different graphics settings to choose from – although Series S only sees two, as ray tracing isn’t possible on the diminuitive device. The update is entirely free, so you should be able to take advantage of the upscaled visuals as soon as you find time to jump into the game today.

Here are the three “next-gen” graphics settings for Doom Eternal:

Xbox Series X

  • Performance Mode: 1800p – 120fps
  • Balanced Mode: 2160p – 60fps
  • Ray Tracing Mode: 1800p – 60fps

Xbox Series S

  • Performance Mode: 1080p – 120fps
  • Balanced Mode: 1440p – 60fps
  • Ray Tracing Mode: Not Available

PlayStation 5

  • Performance Mode: 1584p –120fps
  • Balanced Mode: 2160p – 60fps
  • Ray Tracing Mode: 1800p – 60fps

It’s also worth pointing out that Doom Eternal is offering free upgrades from Xbox One and PS4 to Xbox Series X|S and PS5. If you happened to pick up the game on last-gen systems and recently upgraded to a new console, now is the perfect time to redeem your free game and check out the improved visuals. The game never looked dated – having just launched in March 2020 – but it's shocking how much of a difference ray tracing can make.

Improved fps is also a nice touch, especially if you have a monitor that can handle 120fps.

Although Doom Eternal pulled in rave reviews from critics and fans alike, it hasn't all been smooth sailing for the popular title. Earlier this year, the game added paid microtransactions – breaking a promise it had made to its players.

The cosmetic pack brought bizarre armor to the game, turning the Doom Slayer into an adorable pink unicorn. It wasn't too big a heartbreak for fans, but seeing as the game was said to be "a complete experience with no store just like you’d expect," prior to launch, it was a bit shocking when the unicorn microtransactions made their way into the game.
