It's not really fair to compare the first DOOM 2016 game to its sequel, DOOM: Eternal, as it is newer, it's bound to be shinier-- and doing so could put us at risk of getting our faces ripped off in our sleep by id Software's demonic avatar. However, we're doing the comparison while listening to Mick Gordon's heavy metal riffs and distortions for DOOM: Eternal; all our nitpicky transgressions to the Doom Slayer should be forgiven... hopefully.

Now, with that out of the way, we're here to find out which game one-ups the other in their own respective ways because there would be no DOOM: Eternal without the resounding success of DOOM 2016. So, blast that DOOM: Eternal or DOOM 2016 OST because here are five merits each game does better than the other. Do be civil before you rip and tear one another in the comment section.

10 DOOM: ETERNAL - GRAPHICS

It's pretty obvious which game has the more updated look. id Software is a reputable innovator in the video game industry and has even built a new graphics engine for DOOM: Eternal called idTech 7. DOOM 2016 was run by idTech 6, in comparison. That very well means the details, textures, and overall appearance of the sequel is better.

You can see this in the lighting, the updated character models, and even the little things like blasting giblets off demons piece by piece until they're no longer moving. The new graphics engine also meant that DOOM: Eternal is grander and bigger in scale compared to the tighter and more cramped DOOM 2016.

9 DOOM 2016 - PERFORMANCE AND OPTIMIZATION

One obvious risk of upgrading the graphics and building another graphics engine for a new game is an increased demand for horsepower from the gaming hardware. This is more apparent for PC owners. While DOOM: Eternal is still modest in its system requirements, they're notably higher and more demanding than the predecessor.

DOOM 2016, being an older game with less demanding graphics simply runs better performance-wise and also has fewer performance issues and bugs after years of updates. PC owners with lower-end hardware might find DOOM 2016 more preferable to Eternal in this regard, especially since the fast-paced gameplay is heavily reliant on the frame rate.

8 DOOM: ETERNAL - BETTER GEAR

One look at DOOM: Eternal's weapons and upgrade screens and you'll probably be sold at the build opportunities. In fact, it can be a little dizzying at times trying to juggle all the new stuff the sequel throws at you from the flamethrower, different grenades, and all the weapon upgrades and modifications.

Do we hate it? Of course not! There can never be too many ways to kill a demon and one of those is using the bones you fractured pulled out from their arm to stab them in the head. The weapon, killing, and gear variety in DOOM: Eternal makes its predecessor look way too vanilla.

7 DOOM 2016 - SOME DEMON DESIGNS

It's not hard to find some quick comparison videos of the in-game graphical models for both DOOM 2016 and DOOM: Eternal. Watch a couple of them and you'll notice that certain demon designs make a lot more sense and have a better horrific impact in DOOM 2016. This might be subjective, of course, but still holds some merit.

Anyway, one perfect example of this is the model design for the Revenant. In DOOM 2016, the Revenant had a more menacing design with all the unwashed blood and grime, presumably from all its victims. The same can be said for many of the other demons. You can't help but notice that some of them simply look too "clean" in DOOM: Eternal. Last we checked, there were no hot showers in Hell.

6 DOOM: ETERNAL - MORE ENEMY TYPES

Regardless of whether they look cleaner to you or not, at least there are more of them to slay in DOOM: Eternal! There are a lot more enemy types in the sequel and all of the new additions are interesting and provide a new tactical layer to the combat. In addition, the enemy placement and variety forces players to think more creatively and faster unless they want to be demon chow.

Even if DOOM: Eternal removed some of the older demons from DOOM 2016, they more than made up for it with the fresher enemy types and more Glory Kills. That's right, even the Glory Kills were redone from scratch and you'll find them a lot different compared to the predecessor, even when it comes to the demons the sequel retained.

5 DOOM 2016 - ATMOSPHERE

DOOM: Eternal looking less gloomy and more radiant is a stylistic choice by the game developers as most of the missions take place on Earth and our planet is a beautiful place, supposedly. It's just that this change in color schemes makes it look a bit less metal compared to the red planet in DOOM 2016.

It's not just Mars that looks insanely hopeless and ominous but also the surface of Hell itself in DOOM 2016. It really helps set the mood that you are in a dark place and you're assaulting Hell directly, spreading your religious values to the demons through the use of a double-barreled shotgun instead of just saving the milquetoast humans of Earth.

4 DOOM: ETERNAL - MULTIPLAYER

DOOM 2016, as phenomenal as it was 4 years ago, wasn't exactly perfect as a video game. The single-player component definitely pulled the whole weight of the game, as the multiplayer portion left a lot of players wanting. It was not much different or not much fun compared to others.

Thankfully, DOOM: Eternal rectifies this mistake so now it has fewer sins in the video game industry. Turns out asymmetrical combat with demons and Doom Slayers can be made more fun than initially intended. The sequel's multiplayer certainly sets itself apart in a sea of multiplayer shooters this current generation.

3 DOOM 2016 - LORE EXPOSITION

DOOM; Eternal appears to have given demon-slaying a bigger purpose other than because the Doom Slayer is angry and wants to punch hellspawn to death. Now, we actually have a decent story but much of the lore is sadly tucked away in codex pages which you will have to read should you want a meatier explanation.

Now, since DOOM 2016 didn't care much for the lore and story, it didn't have as much stuff to reveal. However, the few tidbits of information it exposed it did so with style and narrative flair, especially once you get to the history of the Doom Slayer and the Night Sentinels. Plus you didn't have to explore much to find codex pages.

2 DOOM: ETERNAL - GAMEPLAY VARIETY

via PC Gamer

Let's not forget that first and foremost, both DOOM titles are video games. The gameplay is the most essential component they have. In this category, DOOM: Eternal wins with flying colors. We did mention before that the bewildering number of new abilities and gear upgrades makes combat deeper.

Beyond that, DOOM: Eternal also adds puzzle-solving, platforming, and exploration in the mix. They do serve to prolong the game time and are also an integral part of the experience especially if you want the best Doom Slayer setup. Each facade of gameplay in DOOM: Eternal also comes with its own reward.

1 DOOM 2016 - PACING AND PROGRESSION

The thing about the puzzles, platforming, and exploration is that they're not really for everyone. Some players just jump into DOOM expecting nothing other than curb-stomping hapless demons. After all, slow and tedious moments of trying to solve jumping puzzles for that question mark pales in comparison to the high of a skirmish with legions of Hell.

DOOM 2016 makes demon-slaying its sole priority where you don't have to solve too many puzzles or explore too much for upgrades. All you usually have to do is keep going forward while leaving a trail of blood and guts along the way like a certified pain train. It's simple, but it works and many players likely wouldn't mind if DOOM: Eternal did the same focus. Whether it's better because of that or worse is up to you.
