Wanna play DOOM Eternal in third-person? Sure you do. Here’s how to do it.

There’s a cheat engine out there for DOOM Eternal that you can use to activate various console commands, like god mode and no-clip mode. But those aren’t really very interesting--certainly not as interesting as being able to re-activate the pistol, a gun that was cut from the original game before release.

You can also play the game in third-person mode. Unlike 2016’s DOOM, Eternal needed to actually animate the Doom Slayer due to all the new multiplayer modes. Since other players are going to see Doomguy as he runs around shooting rockets, a third-person camera view sort of makes sense.

Although, it looks like id Software didn’t quite iron out all the details before the game’s release, so we can’t really recommend third-person if this is your first time playing through DOOM Eternal. But if this is your second or even third time playing through the main campaign, third-person view might be a fun way to change things up.

To start, you’ll need to download the latest version of the Cheat Engine from this site here. Next, run the Cheat Engine and then the game. Alt-Tab to the Cheat Engine and then select DOOM Eternal on the active process list. Cheat Engine will ask if you want to load the associated cheat table, so hit yes and then check both scripts to ensure they're enabled. Then go back into the game and in the console, type in "pm_thirdperson 1."

Congratulations! You're now looking at the back of Doomguy's head. You can check it out in action here.

You might have noticed that things don’t look quite as amazing in third-person mode. That’s because the gun animations and glory kills only correctly show up in first-person, and aren’t viewable from outside of the Doom Slayer’s head. That’s just how this game mode rolls, so get used to it.

You might also have noticed that the camera doesn’t seem to be positioned right for playing in third-person. This is likely due to id Software not bothering to tweak it since it was never supposed to be enabled. A follow-up video from Gameplay Store adds two more console commands to get the camera centered correctly. Just type in “pm_thirdPersonHeight 0.55” and “pm_thirdPersonRange 1.95” and you’ll get gameplay that looks more like this.

Now enjoy looking at that sweet Slayer skin you unlocked while you’re murdering demons. You’re welcome.
