We all love the Doom Slayer. His murderous rage and relentless urge to mutilate every demon he comes across have made him one of the most endearing figures in video game history. Because while a well-rounded, relatable hero with plenty of character flaws is great and all, sometimes you just want to play as a hulking slab of muscle with a chainsaw.

But even though we don't need any kind of backstory for our old pal Doomguy, there may be an actual reason as to why he's so gosh-darned angry all the time. And it's definitely not what you would expect.

He Will Love Her Forever And Ever

As hard as it may be to believe, there was once a time when Doomguy was just a regular, non-Doom guy. He held down a job, he paid his taxes, he probably had dreams that didn't involve shoving his fist down a Cyberdemon's throat, etc. And like most normal people, he had a pet that he loved and cherished. That pet was a rabbit named Daisy.

We don't know too much about Daisy beyond the fact that she belonged to the Doom Slayer. We do know for sure that he cared an awful lot about the adorable bunny. Especially since she's the very cause for his personal vendetta against the armies of Hell.

Justice For Daisy

For you see, at the end of Episode 3: Inferno of the original Doom, Daisy meets an unfortunate fate. Her head is sitting on a pike - presumably by the hands of some overzealous hellspawn - and by Episode 4: Thy Flesh Consumed, Doomguy has recovered her remains and declares that "someone was gonna pay for what happened to Daisy." And thus a lifelong quest of remorseless vengeance was born.

Yes, the events of the entire DOOM saga seem to have been inspired by the senseless decapitation of a bunny. There's some in-game lore that backs this up, as he's said to carry the rabbit's foot of Daisy around as a memento to remind him of what he's fighting for. You can even see how much he still misses his bunny by wandering around his ship in DOOM Eternal and viewing this exquisite piece of artwork:

If you go through the trouble of commissioning a portrait of you and your pet rabbit, then it's probably safe to assume you were pretty close. No wonder the poor guy is so mad all the time.

A Tearful Reunion....Or It Would Be If Doomguy Could Cry

However, in an unexpected twist, it seems like Daisy's story might not be over. Because if you look closely at DOOM Eternal's front cover, you can spot a bunny-related Easter Egg:

Yup, that's a rabbit alright.

Daisy does indeed make an appearance in Doomguy's latest adventure. But even in a world where Hell's demons have overtaken the Earth and a one-man army is the only thing that can stop them this does feel a little illogical. After all, it's kind of hard for anyone or anything to come back after having their head cut off.

Is this the result of some kind of Hell magic? Is it a hallucinatory trick meant to toy with Doomguy? Or are there so many rabbits now that they just hang around while demons go about their bloody business? Whatever the answer may be, we can only assume that the slight of his long lost furry friend will spark some joy in the heart of the big guy.

Of course, since this is the Doom Slayer we're talking about, being happy for the first time in years will probably only make him even angrier somehow.
