It turns out that Doom fans were right all along: Doom guy's name is actually Doom Guy.

Video games have a lot of iconic characters. We fall in love with their stories, the background, and their adventures. Of course, it helps to know what to call these characters. Doom's co-creator has confirmed that the name we gave the space marine — since he didn't have a name — is actually his canonical name: Doom Guy.

Since Doom's launch, players have been wondering what to call the demon-fighting space marine. Surely, we thought, he had to have a name — despite all evidence to the contrary. Though many fans speculated different names, many became content with calling him Doom guy.

One Twitter user was not happy, though, and reached out to co-founder of id Software John Romero for answers.

Whether or not Romero was being facetious we may never know, but as it stands, the Doom guy's name is officially Doom Guy. Based on his tweet, it's safe to say that he had likely didn't give the name much thought — which is fitting for the game and the creative team's philosophy about gaming.

If you haven't played any of the Doom games, Doom Eternal is now free to play on Game Pass for the Xbox One. PC players will be able to play Doom Eternal later this month when it comes to Game Pass for PC. If you want to get really creative and play the classic games as exactly nobody asked for, you can do so on a digital pregnancy test.

Doom has become so iconic that it's hard to imagine that there will ever be a world without it. In a way, we're glad that Doom guy will always remain semi-anonymous, ripe for lore, and waiting for each player to give him their own unique backstory.
