Doom can be played on a lot of things. You can play it on a graphing calculator, an ATM, an office phone, a digital camera, a toaster, a piano, a pregnancy test, and even powered by a literal potato. However, this is the first time we've ever heard of Doom being played by rats.

Neuroengineer Viktor Tot created an elaborate apparatus to get rats to play Doom 2. You can read the full details over on Medium (via PC Gamer) where he's published his full report, but the gist of it is the rat is suspended on a polystyrene ball using a teeny tiny sweater. The rat then runs on the ball which activates sensors that move the in-game character. A rig directly in front of the rat allows it to shoot and also rewards it with food and water for playing the game.

Also in front of the rat is a giant curved monitor to play on, which from the rat's perspective, must be like playing in an iMax theatre.

The whole thing was made using a 3D printer and stuff Tot purchased on Amazon, so if you've got a pet rat you'd like to train, you can even do it yourself.

Perhaps the best part of the story is the names of each rat, which are Romero, Carmack, and Tom. ”Romero was fearless (more like thrill-seeking) and loved grapes. Carmack was a real architect building around its home keeping it tidy; he was fond of bananas. Tom began shy, but held the most surprises in learning performance.”

At this point you might be rightfully wondering: why rats? Well, it's not just to continue the meme. Tot hopes that his work will allow other scientists to cheaply develop training programs for other rats in a virtual environment.

”A rat, being stationary relative to the setup, can express a wide variety of behavior, while also being recorded by a neural interface," wrote Tot. "Thus, movement and complex in-game actions can be correlated with neural activity in a virtual, yet more natural, lively set of experiments, than in simple maze setups for instance.”

Plus, they're super cute wearing those tiny little sweaters.
