Dota Underlords has arrived on Steam and mobile, and it’s already making a pretty big splash.

Valve has unveiled their version of the popular Dota Auto Chess mod for Dota 2. It’s called Dota Underlords, and unlike Auto Chess, it’s a completely standalone game. It’s also now available in early access completely free as an open beta.

And it’s already doing great. After releasing to record numbers (for a Valve game) last Thursday, it’s already surpassed gaming giants in terms of popularity.

Shortly after launch day, Dota Underlords had over 170,000 concurrent players, beating out the likes of Rainbow Six Siege, GTAV, and Ark: Survival Evolved. Currently, Dota Underlords has 156,000 concurrent players and peaked at just over 200,000 players, putting it just behind Counter-Strike: Global Offensive for player count.

It’s also the best game Valve has released in a very long time. Team Fortress 2 never made it past 123,000 concurrent players, and Artifact peaked at around 60,000. Although, Artifact now regularly dips into the double digits for players, so maybe that’s not the best example.

Left 4 Dead 2, Valve’s most successful title since Steamcharts starting recording numbers, peaked at 161,000 players. Dota Underlords is certainly off to a great start.

And that’s not even the whole story. All these numbers are being pulled from Steam, but Dota Underlords also launched on mobile too. There’s untold more thousands of players to add to this mix playing on their mobile device, and thanks to Underlords’ crossplay feature, mobile and PC players can battle it out together in a first for Valve.

According to Google Play, Dota Underlords has been downloaded over 100,000 times so far, so there could be that many more players on mobile even as we speak.

Dota Underlords won’t be the only one in the emerging “auto battler” genre. Dota Auto Chess creators Drodo Games has already announced they too will be making a sequel to their wildly popular Dota 2 mod with the help of Epic Games. Initially, Drodo was to work with Valve in creating Dota Underlords, but decided to create their games separately and “support each other to the fullest.”

So far, it looks like Valve didn’t need the help.
