Midnight Society, the new triple-A game studio founded by Dr Disrespect and industry veterans from the Halo and Call of Duty franchise, has announced a new initiative that sounds suspiciously like NFTs, although the announcement itself only mentions the acronym once.
In a blog post, Robert Bowling reveals plans for "Founders Access" NFTs. Don't let the terminology in the blog post fool you--these are definitely NFTs. They're minted "using environment-friendly NFT technology," come in limited quantities and are computer-generated avatars using a series of random (but unique!) traits. Midnight Society users who actually purchase these NFTs can retain them or sell them on open NFT markets after a 30-day waiting period.
Although NFTs are and always have been awful, we'll give Midnight Society a bit of credit for at least attaching some real-world value to these purely digital avatars. The studio uses the NFTs, called "VisorCortex IDs," as a visual means of confirming whether a member has paid for several perks, including early access to playable development builds of the studio's upcoming PvP shooter or voting rights for whenever Midnight Society decides to crowdsource its important decisions. VisorCortex ID-owning members also get first dibs on exclusive gear drops and guest list access for major social events.
Or, after 30 days, you can sell your VisorCortex ID on the open NFT markets and pocket whatever cash anyone is willing to spend. Which, we should note, is turning out to be less and less these days as more and more people figure out that NFTs are still basically a scam.
But not just any Midnight Society members can purchase a Founders Access Pass and its attendant VisorCortex ID NFT. Midnight Society is currently taking applications and vetting applicants on four criteria:
- When you joined the Midnight Society community
- How active you’ve been in the community
- How active of a gamer or creator or developer you are in general
- Your vision for what makes a good PVP shooter
Provided your answers line up with what Midnight Society expects, you'll then be offered the opportunity to spend $50 to purchase a Founders Access Pass. Details on how to apply are on Midnight Society’s site.
