Dr. Mario World was downloaded over two million times in its first 72 hours of release and over one hundred thousand dollars was spent on in-app purchases during the same period of time.

Dr. Mario World is the fifth smartphone game released by Nintendo, yet it comes from a comparably less popular spinoff Mario series and it hasn't been promoted as much as games like Fire Emblem Heroes or Super Mario Run. It makes a lot of sense for the Dr. Mario series to be adapted into a smartphone game, as the match-three puzzle style is an ideal fit for the format, but Nintendo hasn't given the game much attention in its advertising.

According to Sensor TowerDr. Mario World was downloaded over two million times within 72 hours of its release and brought in over $100,000 through in-app purchases. Dragalia Lost, meanwhile, was only downloaded 300,000 times in the same time period, but it only launched in five markets and it still brought in over $350,000. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Nintendo's mobile entry in the Animal Crossing series, was downloaded over six million times and made over $1.4 million dollars in the same period, while Mario's first mobile outing in Super Mario Run was downloaded over 4.3 million times and made over $6.5 million in about three days. Finally, Fire Emblem Heroes was downloaded over 4.1 million times and made a staggering $11.6 million in 72 hours as well.

It is worth mentioning that Dr. Mario World was released a day early with little fanfare, which means that a lot of potential customers might not have even been aware that the game was available on its actual launch day.

Dr. Mario World is off to a strong start in terms of numbers, even if it's lagging behind the other Nintendo smartphone games. Nintendo still isn't done with its mobile gaming ambitions, as Mario Kart Tour is also due to be released in 2019 and it's poised to receive a lot more of the company's clout behind it in terms of promotion. This is due primarily to the fact that the Mario Kart series has provided some of the best-selling titles of Nintendo's last few systems.

Dr. Mario World is available now for Android and iOS devices.
