Despite some development trouble, there will be another Dragon Age game though little is known about what it will entail. However, there have been enough leaks and teases to hazard a guess. The as-yet-untitled Dragon Age 4 will likely take players to the Tevinter Imperium and pit them against former companion Solas, who Dragon Age: Inquisition's Trespasser DLC revealed as the legendary Dread Wolf, Fen'Harel.

Solas will likely not be the only character to return as the series has made a habit of bringing back companions and side characters alike. With that in mind, here are five characters that should return and five that should be left behind. Be warned that the obvious entry, Solas, will be omitted since the teaser trailer already confirmed he'll be back and that Dragon Age's expansive roster of characters means some great ones won't make the cut.

Updated on August 17, 2021, by Ritwik Mitra: The announcement of a new title in the Dragon Age series has sent fans into a frenzy as they eagerly anticipate the next chapter in this celebrated western RPG franchise. Dragon Age 4 is shaping up to be one of the biggest BioWare releases in quite some time, and fans will definitely be hoping for some of their favorite characters to rejoin the party for this wild ride. Keeping this in mind, here are some fan-favorite Dragon Age characters that deserve to be featured in Dragon Age 4.

10 Iron Bull, Leader Of The Bull Chargers

The Iron Bull is easily the most notable Qunari to have ever featured in the series. His rambunctious personality makes him one of the most entertaining characters in the entire game, will almost every interaction with this character being an absolute blast.

Seeing this fan-favorite character back in Dragon Age 4 will be a massive treat for fans. His strength makes him a must-have in any combat encounter where physical power is key. Of course, players have to ensure that he doesn't backstab them if they want his character to carry over to the next game.

9 The Hero Of Ferelden

Dragon Age: Origins is the first and greatest game in the series (according to many fans). The game was extremely jam-packed with content and featured one of the most personalized and unique protagonists in the entire series. After all, it features six origin stories across three races.

This character was meant to appear in Dragon Age: Inquisition, but the work required to bring this character back was so extensive that Hawke was chosen as the candidate instead. Perhaps this time, BioWare will have the time required to make this much-requested return a reality for Dragon Age 4.

8 Sera, The Brash Archer

Meeting Sera For First Time

Sera might seem rather pompous when characters first interact with her. However, over time, Sera opens up and shows her soft side to the player through a bunch of endearing interactions.

It certainly helps that there's a song in the game that serves as a perfect representation of Sera's character and is quite catchy to boot. It's a fitting theme for a character who is beloved by many Dragon Age fans as one of the best characters in the series.

7 Cole, Ghost Of The Spire

Cole in Dragon Age Inquisition

Another character from Dragon Age: Inquisition who made a strong impression on players is Cole. His reserved personality, immense power, and mysterious backstory all work in tandem to make for an interesting character who's a blast to team up with during missions.

Cole's presence in Dragon Age 4 might be a stretch, but it'll be great if BioWare manages to find a way to include this character in the game. The fact that he's a spirit in human form was a wild revelation, and the fact that the player could help him be more spirit instead of human was a great touch.

Cole is such a favorite character among the developers as well that he was actually intended to come under the control of Corypheus during the final battle if his loyalty mission hadn't been completed!

6 Alistair, The Bastard King

Alistair making a suspicious face.

Alistair made his name in Dragon Age: Origins before becoming a recurring character in the series. Seeing Alistair develop over the course of Dragon Age's timeline has been a great journey. He started as a bit of a doofus and green Grey Warden recruit.

So the impact on this character in the fourth game will also be just as strong -- especially if he is still the Fereldan King. One can only hope that BioWare brings this character back for one more ride as a main party member.

5 Dorian Pavus, Mage Of The Tevinter Imperium

Dorian feels like the most obvious character to come back either as a companion or an advisor like Leliana. His introduction gave players a much more nuanced view of Tevinter than the tyrannical slavers and mage-supremacists they'd previously been depicted as.

Dorian was last seen in Trespasser where he declared his intention to return to Minrathous and make efforts to reform his homeland. That intention likely makes him a key component of DA4's plot where his wit and necromantic abilities will once again make him a valuable ally.

4 Fenris, The Blue Wraith

On the other hand, an excellent opportunity to enforce canon is by using Fenris. Like Anders, Fenris made his debut in Dragon Age 2 and may not have survived your playthrough. That shouldn't stop BioWare from bringing him back to wreak havoc on his former masters in Tevinter.

Fenris is the most badass companion in the series to date. He's an escaped slave, a skilled and ferocious warrior, and, oh yeah -- he had lyrium painfully grafted into his skin to give him superpowers. If he's alive and well in the time of Inquisition, players can learn from Varric that he's using those abilities to kill Tevinter slavers trying to take advantage of refugees. BioWare should absolutely put some of that into the next game.

3 Calpernia, Leader Of The Venatori Mages

According to series' lead writer Patrick Weekes, Calpernia quickly became one of the writers' favorite characters. But if you only played through Inquisition once, there's a 50/50 chance you didn't encounter her. She's the leader of Corypheus' Venatori forces and only appears if you chose to utilize the Templars instead of the Mages during In Your Heart Shall Burn.

Calpernia is a former slave who still loves her homeland and thought she could use her position in the Venatori to enact some real social change in Tevinter. This makes her a fascinating foil to Dorian as they both want the same thing but have had to take wildly different paths to get there. She can later be turned away from that path when you reveal Corypheus' sinister plans for her so here's to hoping she returns for the redemption arc she so rightly deserves.

2 Your Inquisitor

Dragon Age Inquisition: The Protagonist Holds A Sword While Staring Down An Army Of Demons Falling From The Sky

One of the most exciting surprises of Inquisition was the return of Hawke -- The Champion of Kirkwall. No one thought they'd ever see a former protagonist reappear but, since Inquisition pulled it off so well, there's no reason Dragon Age 4 can't do the same, right?

The Inquisitor will almost certainly not be the protagonist of the next game but their role in the story is far from over whether or not you chose to formally disband the Inquisition in Trespasser. No one has experience with the Fade and with Solas like the Inquisitor. Their knowledge and resources will be invaluable in the coming fight to stop Solas from literally tearing the sky down.

1 Morrigan, The Witch Of The Wilds

morrigan first meeting in dragon age

Morrigan is widely regarded as the best character in any Dragon Age game and has more than earned her place in the continuing narrative. When she was introduced, she stood out from all her fellow companions despite some stiff competition from Leliana and Alistair. She hasn't been in the spotlight since Origins so she's hardly played out.

She also has a ton of story left to tell for two very big reasons. Firstly, her mother, the infamous Witch of the Wilds, was seemingly sacrificed for good in order to awaken Solas' full power giving Morrigan a very personal connection to the coming story.

Secondly, there's that whole business of her giving birth to an Old God (assuming you made the decision to save your Warden's life). Morrigan's story is far from over so BioWare shouldn't slow that arc down anytime soon.
