It's been a long, long wait for Dragon Age 4. It's been so long in fact, that the fantasy RPG series has missed the vast majority of the eighth generation of consoles - something that, according to a new report, the fourth game does not plan to rectify.

As reported by GamesBeat's Jeff Grubb, EA has no plans to bring Dragon Age 4 to PS4 and Xbox One. Instead, it will only be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

The news from Grubb's source is supported by an update spotted on a BioWare employee's LinkedIn. Under their work for the company, they state that Dragon Age 4 is only coming to next-gen consoles and PC, with no mention of PS4 and Xbox One.

While this may be disappointing to some who are yet to get their hands on a next-gen console, it is worth noting how difficult Inquisition's cross-gen release was for the developers. As we learned from speaking to BioWare's Pat LaBine, the team were given less than a year to get the game working on Xbox One and PS3, at a point where they couldn't even get a tavern to load on the consoles. He went as far as to label the efforts a "suicide project". After that, it's possible that the team didn't want to divide their efforts again, focussing on just one release.

Indeed, this generation has been a unique one. Over a year into the PS5 and Xbox Series X's lifespans, and cross-gen releases are still incredibly commonplace. Curiously, BioWare didn't even bring Mass Effect Legendary Edition to next-gen hardware. It can be played on them, but there was no separate release for the consoles. After some meagre offerings in the generation (Inquisition was pretty much the only one to not draw the ire of fans), it's fitting that the last outing is a remaster of a much-adored trilogy.

We still don't have a confirmed release date for Dragon Age 4. However, if Grubb's sources are anything to go by, we can expect it at some point in 2023.
